CASE Space School Expedition Opportunity 2019

Do you have a passion for space, exploration and discovery? Would you like to visit NASA, meet astronauts and astrophysicists and to experience working in a mission control-like environment? The CASE (California Association for STEAM Education) Space School International Study Program may be for you.

Participants have the unique opportunity to join this once in a lifetime experience, going inside NASA facilities and having hands-on learning experiences in many other exclusive places. As the tour is to facilities around Houston, Texas, the tour costs must be weighed up carefully, but for those girls who dream of space exploration, it is a terrific opportunity.

Two different tours are available: The Junior Space School for students in Years 7 to 9 and the Senior Space School for students in Years 10 - 12.

There is a one-hour information session about this opportunity at the Nina Carr Hall at Mentone Secondary College on Wednesday, 13 March.

Last December, three Kilbreda students took up the challenge of Space school. Two students, Emily and Grace Corbitt attended the Junior Space School; and one, Taylah Welsh, embarked on the Senior Space School. All girls thoroughly enjoyed their experiences and recommended the program. You can read about Taylah's experience in the following article.

In the December holidays last year, I was fortunate enough to embark on a two week journey to Houston Texas for space camp. The camp was aimed at space and STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Maths) enthusiasts.

While we were there we participated in  activities such as mission control simulations, SCUBA diving with astronauts, robot coding, built and launched a model rocket ship and so much more. We also met and listened to presentations by astronauts and computer technicians from NASA.

While it was primarily a learning experience, the camp organisers also took us to activities in Houston including an NBA game, The Houston Museum of Natural Science, Rice University and the chance to shop in a Mall.

The highlight of my trip was either SCUBA diving with astronauts or winning second place in Space University with my team 'Curiosity'. While on the trip I made so many friends that we were inseparable and it made all our activities so much fun.

I look forward to many other opportunities like this in the future. I highly recommend this experience to other students.
