Year 10

Design Elements and Principles

We began this unit of work by developing our observational drawing skills and knowledge of Design Elements and Principles.

After completing a freehand drawing of an object the students found in the room, they manipulated it to clearly convey the meaning of the selected Design Elements and Principles which resulted in these highly creative solutions.

Year 11 Outcome 1 -

Drawing as a Means of Communication

In this unit the students began by developing skills in observational drawings of cutlery for the purpose of showing form, proportion, surface textures and relationships between objects, which they later redesigned for different purposes using a range of drawing methods, media and materials.

Year 12 Unit 3 – Industrial Design

In this area of study students will explore a range of existing visual communications in the environmental, communication and presently, on industrial design fields.

Communication: The design and presentation of visual information to convey ideas and concepts.

Environmental: The design and presentation of visual information for built/constructed environments.

Industrial: The design and presentation of visual information for manufactured products.

In each field they analyse how design elements, design principles, methods, media and materials are used to achieve particular purposes for targeted audiences.

Students draw on their findings from the analysis to inform the creation of their own visual communications and articulate these connections. In response to given stimulus material, students create visual communications for different purposes, audiences and contexts using a range of manual and digital methods, media and materials.

At this stage they have explored the field of industrial design, completed their observational drawings and are well into their design process for their own product.
