Foundation & Year 2

Year 2 Community Garden

The Year 2’s have been proudly taking care of our school vegetable garden. This term we have been learning about communities and their needs. Food is a vital need for all communities and the Year 2’s have taken responsibility for food production in our school community.

Students have had opportunities to care for our garden by weeding, fertilizing and watering. Each class has also planted seeds and harvested our produce. We have had great success with tomatoes, pumpkins and cucumber. Some students have even been lucky enough to take home some of our delicious vegetables to share with their family.

We are so excited to begin planning our next season of fruits and vegetables.

Foundation

Term Two has been an extremely busy term for our Foundation students! We have dived straight in to our learning and have had some exciting events happening.

Our Inquiry focus this term has been Geography. The students have been sharing their special places in the world by drawing and writing in their Writer’s Notebook. We also looked at our houses on Google Maps and explored why it is important to know our address in an emergency.

One of our most successful events this term was our Mother’s Day picnic. We had lovely weather and many families come along to enjoy a picnic in the playground. We also had a Mother’s Day stall with many students purchasing gifts for their loved ones. It was wonderful to see so many families come along and enjoy a wonderful day.

In Mathematics, the Foundation students have been learning how to add numbers together. We introduced this learning by using concrete materials to solve simple addition stories and moved on to use more mental strategies such as counting on. They have also have been learning about measuring length and using vocabulary such as ‘longer’, ‘short’ and ‘taller’.

In Reading, the Foundation students have been learning to use our prior knowledge to make self-to-text connections. They have also been learning some different strategies to help decode tricky words and make connections between the word, the picture and the initial sound.

In Writing, the Foundation students have been continuing to write recounts about their weekend. Our goal this term has been to have a go at writing down the sounds we can hear when spelling tricky words. Other students have been working on using finger spaces between their words and sitting their writing correctly on the line.

We look forward to a wonderful second half of the term and meeting with our families during our Three-Way Conference meetings.
