Year 1/2–Celebrating Learning

1/2 - Mainstream/Steiner

On returning from lockdown in term 2, all 1/2 students were immersed in inquiry based learning, inspired by the NADICO theme for 2021, Heal Country. Students questioned and wondered about what country is and why we need to Heal Country.

They took part in:

  • big and little yarns,
  • cleaned country by cleaning up the school yard
  • planted indigenious plants
  • participated in roll play
  • wrote and played songs
  • drew maps of the local areas based on dream time stories
  • read books by first nations people

AND

  • made calendars based on The Eight Wurundjeri Seasons in Melbourne

All classes will be working collaboratively on this year's NAIDOC theme, Heal Country. Students will engage in learning experiences about the ideas of ‘What is Country?’, ‘Why We Worry About Country’, and ‘Healing Country’.   We will also be working with Aviva in the garden at this time to learn about our Native plants and caring for the land.

Bear in mind that there are other seasonal calendars out there referring to six and seven seasons BUT Uncle Bill Nicholson, an elder from the official Wurundjeri Council, has endorsed and refers to Poulter’s seasonal information in his educational sessions, of which Aunty Terri uses in her teaching of the Wurundjeri seasons. She also refers to other published seasons like the Melbourne Museum’s ‘The Seven Seasons of the Kulin Nation’ to provide her with additional information - information from all of these sources would overlap if you were to map it all out in an annual calendar.
