Specialist Lessons

Library

During Library lessons this term, Prep students have enjoyed sharing predictions, making connections to their personal experiences and drawing their favourite scenes from stories.

Year 1/2 students have been learning to share what they like to read. Students brainstormed  the authors, topics and books they have read and enjoyed this year and have chosen one of these to focus on for our green screen puppet project.

Year 3/4 students have used literature to learn about ANZAC Day and the forgotten First Nations soldiers and have more recently been exploring some picture storybooks about Space.

Year 5/6 students have been exploring the structures, ideas and stylistic features of Australian writer/illustrator Tohby Riddle. So far, students have enjoyed examing his picture storybook The Astronaut’s Cat.

Many Years 3-6s have also been enjoying Manga Club which takes place in the library every Wednesday at lunchtime. During Manga Club, students share what manga they are currently reading, discuss their favourite characters or design their own manga characters. This term, students in the Manga Club created their own stickers!

Physical Education

Students were beginning new topics for the remainder of this term.  The students in years 3 to 6 were focusing on Athletics events.  Events to be covered are sprints, hurdles, long jump, triple jump, shot put and discus.  We will be learning techniques as well as timing and measuring our efforts.  The students in Prep to year 2 are focusing on ball skills, ball control and handling.  Catching, bouncing and dribbling are amongst the skills to be covered.  We will remember 2 'golden rules': Keep your eyes on the ball and Hands ready!

Performing Arts

Our  Music focus this term has resulted in lots of creative and often noisy activities! Prep have been getting to know the names, sounds and categories of our school percussion instruments. Year 1/2 have used our glockenspiels to learn about pitch and dynamics in songs. Year 3/4 have produced and performed some wonderful rhythms with djembes, dun duns (West African drums)  and percussion. Vance Joy's "Riptide" has never sounded so good when played by Year 5/6, who have taken on a whole new skills set by learning the Ukulele.

Our Arts Captains, Minhtam and Maddie, have lead many of our juniors (P-2) and Seniors

(3-6)  students in Thursday Lunchtime 'Performing Arts Club'. In fine weather you would have seen the girls out on the playground with microphone  in hand, leading many eager participants in set group dances like 'The Hokey pokey' or 'The Macarena'. - even a few games of Musical Statues.

Next Term we look forward to preparing for the SJV school concert, scheduled for

Tuesday 14th September and Wednesday 15th September  (last week of term three).

More details will be given early next term - mark these dates in your calendar as you won't want to miss it!

Visual Arts

Term two in the Visual Arts room has been a busy one.

Preps began the term experimenting with collage, using paper and fabric. they then moved onto learning about the element of line - creating art works using lines that are drawn, cut and pasted.

Year One and Two have also had a focus on the element of line.  They have been creating intricate patterns using a variety of lines then experimenting with using colour value and contrasting colours to create very different effects.  Now they are focused on the principle of balance and are looking at creating their own mandala.

Year Three and Four students have spent many weeks weaving multicoloured squares.  We have recently begun experimenting with the principle of repetition and pattern.  There have been many expressions of how relaxing making their own entangles can be.

The Year Five and Six students explored some paper engineering skills - looking at different ways to join and use paper when constructing 3D pieces.  They have also created a movie inspired art work using paint blending and silhouettes.  We are now exploring the printing process using acetate sheets as well as looking at the well known Australian artist Margaret Preston, who favoured the printing process.

In all activities across each year level, we are experimenting with or trying to become more competent with different materials and tools.

Have a look at the art contest being run by Zart Art.  Our Art Captains have put all the details together and can be found further on in the newsletter.

Indonesian

Selamat pagi! (Good morning),

I am excited to share snapshots of our students’ creativity and engagement with their Indonesian learning.

Our Seniors are engaged in the process of creating their Indonesian Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) project for the Student Film Festival.

The Middle classes have looked into Indonesian Layang – Layang (Kites). They have creatively designed their own kites while practising their Indonesian language.

The Juniors have practised how to name different places at school using the Indonesian language. They were excited to create our school map using Indonesian words.

Stay safe and God bless.

Sampai jumpa,

Pak Kris
