TAFE TRADE READINESS PROGRAM - BRICKLAYING
A great opportunity is happening at LIHS where interested students in yr 10 and 11 are involved in making a new brick pathway construction in our Quiet Quad. TAFE Bricklaying teachers are working with students to learn how to build trenches, create footings and lay brick walls. This will be a great addition to the Quiet Quad, so students can keep off the garden and access our walk way in F block. Students are learning new skills, understanding the expectations to be a bricklayer and will participate in employer talks later in the week. Thanks to Mr Cohen for lending the equipment from our construction classes to support this event.
R2go PROGRAM
In addition to Lake Illawarra High School Careers Program, our school independently funds the Ready To Go Transition to Work Program – R2GO. A Student Employment Adviser works with selected students in Year 8-12, in either small groups or individually. This program is for students interested in early transitioning and provides career exploration and work experience opportunities to build a student’s skills and knowledge for future career pathways. Students become aware of employer’s expectations and actively prepare for the work environment. This is a successful and productive program. We will also be doing industry visits, again this year.
YEAR 12 PREPARE FOR 2022
Students planning on applying to university for 2022 have been given information about applying to UAC (University Admissions Centre). You can apply for undergraduate study through UAC if you are: an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or the holder of an Australian permanent resident humanitarian visa. Information about courses and support for the application process can be found on the UAC website - https://www.uac.edu.au/. It is also advisable that students thinking of university should compare courses at the different university websites, attend open days and research in order to be ready.
During Term 2 and 3 I will be undertaking individual interviews with each Year 12 student, in preparation for their future pathways. Parents/ carers are invited to speak with me with any questions or concerns or to provide any information. Careers newsletter info is on the LIHS website and students also receive information sent to their emails.
MOCK INTERVIEW 2021
Year 10 and interested senior students are encouraged to participate in the annual Mock Interviews conducted at LIHS. Over 10 different representatives from educational, business and group training organisations are involved in Careers Lessons, Year 10 students are currently preparing for the event on Thursday Week 6 Term 2 27th May. Students will be able to do a short practice interview to develop their skills in how to answer questions and present themselves positively.
WORK READY PROGRAM 2021
Students in Year 10 are invited to participate in WORK READY workshops during each term. This is primarily to assist them in being ready for work experience at any time during the school year. It will include information on work experience, what is is expected by employers, safety in the work place and more. By participating in the 2 hour workshop students will then be assisted in applying for work experience in an area of their interest.
At Lake Illawarra HS, students in Year 9 or 10 are able to do work experience during the last week of Term 1 - 3 as well as in late Term 4. Requirements are that students are over 14 years old, have proven a positive attitude and have participated in the Work Ready workshop. If students are keen to do more than one week to help finalise future planning it is possible, they simply need to discuss things with the Careers Adviser.
It is important that students are active in securing work experience as early as possible, to avoid missing out on their first choice of location. Students can find their own work experience, but if support is required the Careers team is ready to help.
