Pathways & Headstart

Pathways

It has been busy down in the Pathways office with National Careers Week. Thank you to Mr Massouris and the VCAL students for putting together the videos for Careers Week, they have been fantastic.

Pathways have organised lunch time activities including guest speakers and the popular virtual reality career goggles – thanks to HeadStart. Don’t forget to check out our Careers Newsletters which are posted on Compass and you can find previous copies on our webpage.

Pathways took the Year 9 students out to Monash University on Thursday 20 May. Students got to participate in a program called ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’. It was an opportunity for students to gain an insight into University and was directly related to their goal setting, personal development and awareness as well as the beginning of their pathways research.

Here are a few photos from National Careers Week and our excursion.

HeadStart

The HeadStart and Pathways Teams joined together at lunchtime this week to provide some practical and fun activities to engage students in the world of careers. There was resume writing, a workshop on apprenticeships and of course the virtual reality goggles which were quite a hit for staff and students alike.

The goggles are a resource that allow students to virtually explore careers without actually having to leave the classroom or the safety of their chair.

Students are currently able to explore 22 careers on the goggles including architect, civil engineer, dentist, firefighter, park ranger and many more. The list is not exhaustive and another 20 or more careers such as carpentry, plumbing, policing, orthopaedic surgeon & nursing will be added soon.

Whilst in the virtual world student can explore a day in the life of that career and are even able to access pre-recorded questions and gain answers to the most asked questions of a person in that chosen career.

Any student that is interested in exploring careers in the virtual world are invited to visit the HeadStart office in the Careers Resource Centre and express an interest and we will be only too happy to run these sessions again.  If you are looking for help or advice on anything careers oriented no invitation is necessary just pop in at recess or lunch time and the team will be only too happy to help.
