Indonesian

It's About Time!

In Indonesian we have been stretching ourselves with our number knowledge.

Students in R-2 classes are beginning to use 1-12 (satu ke dua belas) to tell the time. A clock in Indonesian is called a jam. To say this we've had to revise our long vowel sounds in Indonesian, so it sounds like "jarm". Jam has tiga (3) meanings in Bahasa Indonesia. It can mean clock, time or hour! So much more simple than English.

The Year 3-6 students have been working on creating linimasa (timelines). This has been a real stretch for our number fluency. Saying big numbers like 1987 in Bahasa Indonesia takes a lot of practice to reach accuracy and automaticity. Try saying this; seribu sembilas ratus delapan puluh tujuh (1987). Not as easy as English, is it?

I have a challenge for you. Can you write down on a slip of paper the year Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) was created? You'll need to write down the words, not just the numerals and deliver it to me either in person or ask a teacher to put it in my pigeon hole. Make sure you write the jam on your paper so I know who got in first! Selamat!
