Malgobila News

Years 10,11 & 12

malgobila@bairnsdalesc.vic.edu.au

What a term it’s been! Students in the Malgobila Hub have been working hard to complete assessment tasks and activities before the end of term. Year 12 English students have completed their first whole-cohort SAC in the Exam Centre and participated in an interview with Emily St. John Mandel – the author of their Analytical Text ‘Station Eleven’. This was a great opportunity for students as she is a best-selling author based in Canada, and it was great to hear her insights on the novel.

There have been many excursions and activities occurring over the last few weeks:

  • Year 10 students to Federation University
  • Year 10 students visited Monash Rural Health
  • Interschool Football
  • Clontarf Cup
  • Practical classes in science and technology.

We wish all students, staff and families a relaxing break - and remember to do your Holiday Homework! We look forward to seeing you back in Term 2 feeling recharged and ready for another busy term.

Year 10 Leadership

On Tuesday our Year 10 students held an assembly. During this assembly our Year 10 student leaders were announced.  Congratulations to the students who applied for leadership positions and who were successful.

These students will be meeting every second Wednesday to discuss ideas and improvements for their Year 10 Level.

Year 10 Excursion

Year 10 Students this week participated in an excursion to Federation University Churchill Campus.

Students who attended the excursion to Federation University had the opportunity to tour the campus and participate in workshops with guest teachers.

Students were also given a quick tour of the nursing training facility, where they were able to check pulse rates, how to give CPR and instructions on giving injections to dummies.

The visit to Federation University provided students with an insight into university life and courses offered. Everyone enjoyed the day.

Year 12 Students taking pride in our school grounds.

Thank you Bree,  James, Vaughn and Callum for cleaning all the outside tables and chairs around the Malgobila Building.   It looks great!

Intermediate VCAL  Students

For their mini project, Intermediate VCAL students Jorja Glenton, Madi Grimsey and Kilarnee Wilkinson created wellbeing packs for each off the hubs, for students to use when needed. They contacted outside agencies for flyers and business cards also.

Catering for BTN ( Bairnsdale Tambo Network)

Our VET Hospitality team as part of their classroom work provided the afternoon tea for a meeting held on site with principals from schools within our region.  The food, coffee and service was amazing.  Well done to the VET Hospitality students and staff!

ANZAC Day Assembly

Bairnsdale Secondary College’s Anzac Day Ceremony was held today, Thursday 7th April 2022 to commemorate the Anzac’s who served before us.

Our College Captains were responsible for the development and hosting of the program. We could not be prouder of what they achieved this morning.  Well done.

Please head to our 'What's been happening' page for more details and photos of our Anzac Day ceremony.

VCAL Neighbourhood House

written by Samuel Turnley

Every Monday I go to Neighbourhood House to do my work placement which involves gardening and general maintenance. Whilst completing my placement I have met several new people who come to visit Neighbourhood House. I have found that this is the type of work I like to do as it is outside and it is different to the gardening work I do for VCAL at school, which is a good learning experience as I am using new equipment such as a mulcher, whipper, hedger.

VCAL  Kitchen Garden Group

The VCAL Kitchen Garden group have been working throughout the term with two workers from Gippsland Lakes Complete Health. Andrea and Jacqui attend Wednesday morning sessions and work in the garden and kitchen supporting our students in developing their skills and making healthy choices with the foods that they prepare and eat.  We have been cooking from the pantry, using left over ingredients and students have been amazed and delighted with the range of foods that have been concocted in the kitchen.

This week we sampled a spicy dahl with homemade naan bread along with carrot and zucchini muffins. Other delicious treats from the kitchen have included, vegetable frittata, celery and vegetable soup, apple ,pear and rhubarb crumble and homemade protein bliss bombs!! Delicious.

We will continue our partnership with Gippsland Complete Health next term and we are hoping to get the veggie gardens planted with our winter crop, build a compost bay and develop a composting education program within our College community, whilst continuing to create healthy and cost efficient snacks from our garden and kitchen..

Year 11 Formal - Postponed not Cancelled

Throughout Term 1 the senior team have been working hard to ensure that Bairnsdale Secondary College is able to support a Year 11 formal our students will remember and cherish.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will need to postpone the formal until Term 3, date to be advised early in Term 2. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Note: This event is an extra-curricular event that is self-funded. Ticket sales help support costs for catering and decoration. Further information will be delivered early in Term 2.

Year 10 Food Choices

In our Year 10 Food Choices class students focus on nutrition and eating healthily for the family. Last week the students created and designed an individual dish that would suit a buffet lunch, it was a Master Chef Competition and Elly Forrester won with a wonderful butter chicken, rice and naan meal.

LAST DAY OF TERM 1

Today our Year 12 students enjoyed a fun day dressing up and a BBQ lunch on the deck to celebrate all their hard work this term.
