Drama Camp – Theatrecraft Youth Unlimited
A big hello to all reading this! My name is Sam Dolan, I’m a former a student and school captain of BSC. Since graduating, I’ve completed my BA in Acting for Stage and Screen at Federation University in Ballarat, then I moved to Melbourne to pursue my acting career, I’m glad to say it’s gaining some momentum.
I’m currently involved in running a program of drama camps with Theatrecraft Youth Unlimited, a branch of the Victorian Drama League. We facilitate camps that strengthen skills in theatre and acting, and other stagecraft areas if that’s more your thing. We’ve got an exciting year coming up, running three camps in each set of school holidays. Our first camp ‘Grounding’, in Autumn, heavily focuses on developing skills to work together as an ensemble and devise works specifically in physical theatre. We have more than 15 sessions over the course of the camp, each working towards an in-house performance. It’s going to be lots of fun and I can guarantee you’ll learn a great deal.
Following that camp we have our ‘Distilling’ Camp, in Winter, with a focus on text work, and writing and developing theatre and story. Our ‘Blooming’ camp in Spring is about bringing it all together, movement, writing, and enriching rehearsal and theatre skills.
I was a participant in these camps since 2017 and having since graduated from university, I’m now spearheading these camps. I’ve learnt so much from incredible and dedicated leaders, with many skills still prominent in my practice.
The camp is open to people, aged 13 to 21 - however we have had particularly keen 12 year old participants join us too; if that’s you, please get in contact! Our Autumn camp is running from the 19th to the 23rd of April based at Urban Camp in Melbourne.
To register or enquire, email tyu@vdl.org.au Joanne Watt is the program coordinator and has been organising these programs for over 10 years!
If you have any other questions about the camps, or would like to chat about the path to tertiary education in theatre, or acting in general, feel free to email me at sammywdolan@gmail.com
All the best for to you for your year at BSC
