Week 2 Term 2

Welcome back to Term 2! It promises to be an exciting term. Compared to previous years, this term is quite short at only 9 weeks. Two of those weeks are only four day weeks due to the ANZAC Day and Queens Birthday public holidays.

To begin term 2 some of the main areas of focus will be persuasive writing and making inferences in our reading. In Maths we will be covering addition and subtraction, time, location and money.

For Inquiry we have begun our unit called the Blue Marble. The rationale behind this unit is that the students will understand the importance of habitats for plants and animals which encourages us to think and act sustainably when we interact with the environment. The students will investigate:

  • Life cycles and ecosystems.
  • The human impact on the environment.
  • Endangered animals and threats that they face.
  • Ways which people can help endangered animals.

In the photos below the students are looking around the yard for living and non living things, things that were once alive but no longer and products of living things.

In Ed in Faith we will be celebrating the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. Eucharist is about thanksgiving and celebration and the students will share how they celebrate with their families and friends. They will learn about the important rituals and symbols of Eucharist and discuss and record the qualities of Jesus. Fr Chinua will visit the candidates for first holy communion and the rest of the students on Wednesday 25th May and Thursday 2nd June before they celebrate on Sunday 5th June.

This week the Year 4s  attended John Paul College for the annual transition day.  The students got to participate in a variety of activities across the school including an art class, theatre / drama class and a food technology class. They got to have recess and lunch outside and finished with a scaveneger hunt led by some year 9 school leaders. A great day was head by all and we got to see a few former SFX students along the way!

Some students in Year 3 and 4 also had the opportunity to represent the school at the Bayside District Field Athletics day at Ballam Park. It was so great to see the students have a go at events such as high jump, long jump, discus, shot put and high jump. For many of the students this was their first exposure to athletics competition against other children. They can all be so proud of their effort! We even came away with a few ribbons!

Next week the Year 3 students will undertake the NAPLAN tests. From Tuesday - Friday the students will complete four different assessments. These include writing, reading, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and maths.

Looking forward to a great term! See you all very soon.
