Careers News

Work Experience week is coming up on 18th- 23rd June

Students were given work experience forms late last term. If students were absent or have misplaced their form, they can come to the Careers Room to collect another one. Students should have returned their forms by Monday 30th April.

We really urge students to find a placement that is related to a career they may want to pursue when they leave school rather than just finding a retail placement. This is a real opportunity for students to explore whether their intended career path is what they really want to do. For students who are struggling to find something, consider the following pointers:

  • Talk to your friends and let them know what you’re interested in – they may know someone they can put you in touch with;
  • Talk to your extended family – grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins – once again they may know someone. If it’s located near where they live, you could perhaps consider staying with them for the week;
  • Speak to neighbours, your sport coach, other teachers;
  • Where possible, asking in person is a better option – it’s harder to say know to someone who is in front of you. It also gives them the chance to see what you are like; and,
  • Don’t be put off if employers say no to you. There are many reasons why they may not be able to take you on and this will not have anything to do with you personally e.g. not enough work, they already have work experience students, it’s not an appropriate environment to have work experience students.

Please note, if students find a placement which requires them to travel with their employer or have accommodation with their employer because they are located too far from home, an additional form must also be completed and signed by parents and the employer. This is attached to the Work Experience form.

Please check that all parts of the forms are completed thoroughly as they must be filled in and signed by students, parents and the employer before being returned to the Careers Room where it will be checked and then signed off by the Principal.
