Fantastic 3/4

Term 1 Week 2 2023

What have we been up to?

The 3/4 teachers would like to welcome back all the students and parents to a new school year. We have all had a lovely start to the first two weeks. It’s great to see so many happy faces at school!

Students have been working on a series of activities to jump start our school year, while focusing on our school and classroom culture. We have centred our learning around the 7 Habits and how we can become leaders at school and at home. Each class has created their classroom mission statement as well as a personal mission statement. Students have applied for classroom leadership roles and created their personal and academic WIGs (Wildly Important Goals) for the term. These activities have had the students participating in classroom discussions, working and collaborating as a team (in pairs and small groups), as well as working well independently. We can’t wait to see what else they will achieve as the year progresses.

In Literacy, the students have started learning about narratives. We have broken these narratives up into subheadings, such as orientations, complications, and solutions and highlighted the important parts of what belongs under each heading. We can’t wait to see what the students come up with when they write their own independent narrative!

In Maths, students have started looking at the place-value concept,  where they will be learning to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers to at least tens of thousands. We have been having lots of fun using MAB blocks, charts, dice and cards to support our learning.

In inquiry, students have started their Civics and Citizenship unit of work. Students described cultural, religious and/or social groups to which they and others in the community may belong. They explored and explained how belonging can shape personal identity.

What’s coming up?

Literacy

Throughout the next couple of weeks, Students will continue reading and writing different types of narrative texts.

Numeracy

Students will be focusing on recognising, modelling and representing numbers to at least 10 000. We will apply place value to be able to partition and rearrange numbers.

Science & Inquiry

In Science, we will start our Physical Science unit. Students will be introduced to different types of forces such as frictional force, tension force, normal force, air resistance force, applied force and spring force. In Inquiry, Students will identify their own cultural backgrounds, religious and social groups leading to an appreciation that as Australians we come from many different cultural backgrounds. Students will list and compare the different purposes, beliefs, traditions and symbols used by groups.
