BEACH VOLLEYBALL SCHOOLS CUP 2023

The first tournament for our Year 7s on Tuesday 7 March was so successful:

  • McKinnon Year 7 Boys 4s finished up with a Gold medal! Sensational effort from Lio Widianto, Tom Hill, Net Doan, Kevin Duong and Raphi Levy;
  • A nimble McKinnon Year 7 Boys 4s team took out the Silver. Well done to Joseph Song, Jayden Velu, Archie Braithwaite and Aston Thomson;
  • The Year 7 Girls 4s received a Gold medal; amazing work by Miri Karro, Jasmine Chilco-Burns, Charlotte Orr and Olivia Davies;
  • Our Year 8 Boys 4s came home with a Silver medal - the boys played so well with great teamwork all day - Rhys Peel, Michael Gordeyev, Mateo Capurro Martinez, Jonathan Greenberg and Max Atherinos

It was lovely to see ten of our Years 10/11s from the Volleyball Program mentoring and encouraging the juniors in their first tournament; we have such a great community spirit and I thank all the helpers involved. A big thank you also goes to Mara Karro, Ray Braniska and Ellie Adler for all their support and encouragement of athletes during the day.

On Wednesday 8 March, the McKinnon Year 9 Girls proved they were the best pairs of the day, taking home the Gold - well done Rosie O’Brien and Brit Apps.

Thursday 9 March was a Silver medal day with Year 10 Girls 4s - Lara O’Brien, Rita Kon, Maddie Stancheva and Anne Min; as well as the Year 10 Girls pairs - Alma Segev and Jess Fellini. An impressive display of diving all over the court to keep the rallies going, whilst fighting the sun and wind!

Well done to all who participated to represent the college and be part of the wonderful experience of the Beach Volleyball Schools Cup. We are so proud of all of our athletes’ efforts, for having fun and always playing with kindness and great sportsmanship. Thanks, Liam Adlington, for driving the bus and general support of our program.

On Friday 10 March our Years 11/12 teams will be playing the final day of the tournament. Will McKinnon Secondary receive the Cup for Best Beach Volleyball school overall again? Stay tuned for the senior results that will be out in the next bulletin.

YEAR 7 VOLLEYBALL

From Monday 27 February to Friday 3 March the PE Department along with the Year 12 Sport House Captains ran a lunchtime Year 7 House Volleyball Competition. The winners of each match would be the team who was first to reach 21 points with a two-point buffer.

The competition kicked off on Monday with Gilmore taking on Chisholm. There was a great turn out of Year 7s who played with a competitive and fun spirit. Gilmore took the win and traveled to the Grand Final held on Friday.

To find out who would go head-to-head with Gilmore in the final, we held our second match on Thursday with Monash taking on Flynn. Showing off their best volleyball skills, this time it was Monash who came out on top.

Finally, the big match was played at lunchtime on Friday - Gilmore vs Monash. The gym was filled with Year 7 volleyballers and students from other year levels coming to cheer their houses on. The Grand Final was closely contested with the houses matching each other point for point, until finally one team pulled away with a score of 26-24. The winner was Monash!

Congratulations to Monash and thank you to all the Teachers, House Captains and Year 7 Players for making this competition a success.
