Learning and Teaching

Week 10 Term 4

Learning in Action - Re-imagining Learning

This year there has been a focus on 'Taking Action' and building connections with our learning. As we progress into 2023 an even greater emphasis will be placed on Michael Fullan's Deep Learning and the corresponding 6C's.  The goal of the 6C's: Character, Education, Citizenship. Creativity, Communication, Collaboration and Critical Thinking are crucial to education and enable learners to solve problems and 'deal with life.' Research suggests that when technology is leveraged in this process learning and teaching is transformed.

This week our teachers shared the action they had taken as part of their inquiry unit of work. The learning that has occurred is amazing and needs to be celebrated. In Prep, the unit of work was titled 'A Taste of Geography.' They started small and begin to build their world. The students concluded the session with a project poster showing all the things they had explored together in teams. They then engaged in designing and building their own communities.

In Year One, the students connection to their learning was driven by their findings on their excursion. Students researched and looked into the landmarks they saw and connected their further learning to their experiences and insights. In Year Two, their unit of work was launched from the text 'Making your Mark.' They celebrated their learning by holding a parent expo which was well attended by many members of our community. Our students were engaged and excited.

In Year Three, the learning was based around the book 'Mr Chicken All Over Australia.' The students selected a state to investigate and created a presentation to share with their buddies. In Year Four, an exploration related to refugees in Australia was conducted. They connected with other schools with a high refugee population. They explored differences in cultures, sent postcards to students at other schools and raised money to support our refugees in Australia.

In Year Five, students conducted their own exploration and 'Raced Around the World.' They explored financial maths and used digital technology to support their learning. Our Year Six team explored values related to living in Australia. They were then asked to compare and contrast a country in the world that would be a place where their identified values would be supported. They also identified charities they wanted to raise money for and conducted a market day to support this.

We need to continue to celebrate our learning and teaching at St Louis!
