YEAR F -2

We have had a wonderful week in the F-2 learning spaces this week.

We were so fortunate to have scientist, Lisa Francione, and Elizabeth’s Mum, come in and talk to us about things we can do to keep our bodies safe and healthy. As inquirers, we learnt that our favourite snack, yoghurt, is filled with these special microorganisms called probiotics, which help our body fight off sicknesses! As researchers, we did a number of experiments to see how our bodies would react to different types of germs. We came to the understanding that it is very important to make sure that we are fueling our bodies with good and nutritious food so that we can live healthy lives! Here are some of our discoveries:

  • Yoghurt is actually good for you! - Eva
  • Healthy food actually makes sure your body is healthy too. - Eponine
  • Healthy food is nice. - Chrysi
  • Not all food is healthy but you should try your best to have good food. - Nefeli

Thank you so much for your time, Lisa! Check out some photos of us in action here:

In Year 1/2, as mathematicians, we have continued to explore capacity and mass. We have enjoyed estimating which containers are bigger and which containers are smaller, which hold more and which ones hold less, which are heavier and which are lighter, and then checking our thinking using the scales. As collaborators, we have been sharing our thinking and justifications with the class and listening respectfully to the ideas of others.

In Foundation, we explored money by looking closely at the coins used in Australia.  We identified that the coins were different shapes, colours, and sizes. As researchers, we noticed that the coins have different values, different pictures on one side and that the Queen is on the other side. We did the rubbing of the coins and sorted the coins in value from the smallest value to the largest value. We also attempted to match coins to the value of the prices of some different items. It was lots of fun!

This week, those of us in FLW had time and the opportunity to read at the Whole School Prayer for the very first time! We were feeling a little nervous at first, but we demonstrated courage, confidence and resilience as we stood up there, read to the community and shared our prayers of thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter. We look forward to lots of learning next week!

YEAR 3/4

It has been another busy week of learning for the Year 3/4 students.

As mathematicians, we are learning to tell the time to the minute. In our learning spaces, we created our own clocks and noticed the connection between fractions and time. Using our prior knowledge of fractions, we were able to explain how an analogue clock can be broken into quarters to help us tell the time.

One of the learning experiences this week was playing a game called Time Match with a partner. As collaborators, we took turns to flick the spinner and place a counter on the board that is equivalent to the time shown on the spinner. The first person to place three counters next to each other was the winner.

As members of a Faith Community, we tuned into the season of Advent. As researchers, we found out about the Advent wreath and candles, the meaning of each candle and when we light them. Advent is a time of waiting and preparing for the arrival of Jesus Christ. We read the scripture story from Matthew 24:37-44 and discussed the theme of Hope. As thinkers, we showed our understanding of the story by completing a Colour Symbol Image Thinking Routine. We look forward to learning more about Advent and how we can prepare for Christ's arrival.

YEAR 5/6

Week 9 has been a busy week!

In Religion, the students have reflected on the Caritas stories and prayers of Peace (the second candle of Advent). They have read the second Gospel reading from Matthew 3:1-12; “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” We have unpacked the scripture reading and to deepen their understanding, the students completed a Colour, Symbol, Image (CSI) thinking routine.

This week, the Year 5 students were busily preparing their speeches for leadership roles for 2023. They presented their speeches to Mrs Watson and leadership, to their teachers and their peers. The students had the opportunity to vote for their preferred leaders. We are very proud of their efforts and commitment. They will find out the outcome of their presentations in the coming week.

In Literacy, the students have read a variety of texts about the World Soccer games. To better understand these texts, they were required to interpret tables and graphs. They were also required to answer questions using questioning, literal and inferring comprehension strategies. The students have been engaged in writing their own ‘yearbook’ for 2022. They have included their favourite stories, experiences and memories of St Fidelis.

In Numeracy, the students are consolidating their understanding of fractions. They are adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators; they are finding equivalence using fraction walls and playing fractions games such as ‘Colour in Fractions’.

The 5/6 students are eagerly practising for the yearly Christmas carols concert. They have been learning Christmas songs and are showing off their dance moves! We can't wait to show you what they can do!

Enjoy the final weeks of 2022!
