Principal's Report

Dear Parents,

What a fantastic week we had last week, with lots of extra things going on at the school but most importantly is was great week because I saw lots of students covering themselves in glory demonstrating growth in their learning. We end the term on a real high as our children gave so many accounts of what beautiful people they are through the resilience project.

AUNTY JOY MURPHY

We were honoured with a visit from Aunty Joy on Thursday.  Aunty Joy performed a traditional smoking ceremony in front of all our students. Aunty Joy also performed a beautiful welcome to country, giving everyone a gum leaf and explaining how we must give back what we take from the land.

After having a Q and A session with all the students she then took the time to speak to our grade 5/6 students about the stolen generation, which they are currently studying in class. Aunty Joy is Sophie Young’s grandmother so she does have a very keen interest in our school but we were still very lucky to have her visit.

THE WORLDS GREATEST SHAVE

Ben and Jacob Ahmad did a very special thing and raised money for the greatest shave foundation.  They shaved their beautiful locks of hair in a fundraising effort, some of their hair will be made into wigs for people that lose their hair while going through cancer treatment.  The money raised will help families doing it tough through blood cancer right now.

I would like to thank them both for doing such a wonderful thing and to everyone who supported them.

DISTRICT ATHLETICS

Last Friday our grade 3-6 children competed in the district athletics carnival. Although we didn’t win the carnival, we were winners on the day, as I had a number of teachers and parents comment about how wonderful our students’ manners were. Something I love to hear.

It was fantastic to see our students doing their best and striving hard.  Thank you as always to Mr. Gibbons who does an outstanding job organising all the sporting events for the school.

ASSEMBLY

Our final assembly for the term will be a face to face assembly, next term we will also run normal Friday afternoon assemblies again.  It is wonderful that we are almost back to pre-COVID rules.  We do however, still have to restrict the number of people in the hall. Therefore we will only be inviting and allowing parents into assembly if their child/children is receiving an award. I hope everyone can understand these new rules.

THE WOORI EXCELLENCE AWARD

The Woori Excellence Award is the highest honour a student can achieve in their grade each term. Teacher’s judge who they believe has strived for excellence academically, socially and upheld our values of high expectations and respect.

The recipients of this award will have their award (and their picture) displayed in a frame in the office area until the following term. They will also receive a special pin to be worn with pride on their uniform. Pin colours are determined on how many previous excellence awards a child has received. Winning one of these awards is a major achievement.

RESILIENCE PROJECT

We asked some of our children to write about Martin’s visit to the school:

Resilience project

On Monday 22nd of March a very kind and funny man came to WYPS. He focused on teaching us how to be, and what resilience is. His name was Martin. Martin told us about the acronym GEM. G=Gratitude E=Empathy and M=Mindfulness. Martin was a great influence to others and even himself; he never thinks of what people think of him. What makes people resilient is the ability to find humor in situations that would overpower you

Martin taught us to be empathetic and kind towards others. He talked about how he had worked with a boy named Jeremy who had degenerative disease and was the kindest & happiest boy in the world. He also said that Dustin Martin and other footy players write in a resilience book and write down 3 things they are grateful for every day. Martin spoke a lot about empathy. Being empathetic means to feel what others are feeling or going through and helping them feel better. Your story of resilience will stir up resilience in others! We are so excited to keep practicing everything we have learned from Martin in class.

Martin from resilience project

Have you ever seen someone that is having a hard life? Martin is the one to help them with their life. He loves to make them laugh and do exercise with them. He loves to help people and he use to be a teacher. He has kids and he likes to play fun games and do silly things. As well as him being funny he is very helpful and joyful. If you have a friend or family member that is having trouble with their life get martin to help. It is always good to help people that you don’t know but you must get Martin to help as he is amazing. He is respectful to everyone he helps. He helps someone called Jeremy and he is in high school. He can’t eat or drink. Jeremy’s parents got Martin to help and that has changed Jeremy’s life a lot.

IT WILL BE AMAZING IF YOU GET MARTIN TO HELP!   He is a great helper to everyone's life. He is an upstander. He is so inspirational! He says a funny word that he wants everyone to say…

DIS!

So please get Martin to help!

THANK YOU!

-  Mia.

Martin from the resilience project

Are you struggling with anything click here ü for Martin. He loves having a buddy while exercising.  For breakfast Martin eats really healthy things, then he thinks about people more unfortunate than himself? He talked a lot about bananas? His son comes up to him and sings the banana song by the minions.

He is kind, respectful and considerate. He is so funny and if you get bullied he will be your upstander. We totally recommend Martin. When you meet him you won’t be able to breathe because you're dying in laughter. You are going to want him in your everyday life. He loves hard rock music like thunderstruck by AC/DC. When you see him you will not regret it. He is so inspirational. He used to be a teacher and one of his students used to go to school every day even on the weekends because he didn't want to miss out on education.

Martin from the resilience project

Have you ever heard of the resilience project? Well if you haven't you should. Not long ago Martin the guy from the resilience project came to our school. I loved it, I thought he was very funny but it also was really inspirational and I learnt to strive for excellence and be grateful for what I have and for everyone around me. In conclusion I liked Martin`s performance!!!

Resilience Project

Martin was talking about when he was a kid. He was nervous to jump in a lake. So he tried, he said it was fun and he did it again and again and his mum got mad at him but he still did it. He taught us when we are nervous still give things a go!

Resilience Project

I liked that Martin showed us the video because he was trying to show us empathy in the video. He did that so we can show empathy to other people just like him.

- Harlem

I wish you all a very safe and happy Easter, I hope you all get time to read and relax.

I hope to do the same and also hope to see Carlton actually win a game!
