Driver Safety Program

In partnership with Santa Sabina College, we have been fortunate to secure Melissa McGuinness, from YOU CHOOSE – Youth Road Safety  to speak to our Year 10, 11 and 12 students on the afternoon of Friday 21 May about road safety, choices and consequences. The presentation coincides with the Fatality Free Friday initiative being run on Friday 28 May by the Australian Road Safety Foundation.

Melissa is a mother of three children, who painfully lives with the death of her 18-year-old son from a horrific car accident in 2012. Melissa and her husband Peter have appeared on SBS Insight, the Today show, A Current Affair, Studio 10, Women's Weekly and many more media outlets.  She was ‘2020 Gold Coast Woman of the Year - People’s Choice’ and most recently, runner up in the 2021 Queensland Australian of the Year.

Melissa presents to schools around Australia, sharing lived experiences with thousands of students, teachers and parents. The program extends beyond a cautionary tale by building a social movement for changed driving culture among young drivers. Messages are focused on love, family, leadership, accountability and empowerment through choice. YOU CHOOSE – Youth Road Safety is highly acclaimed by professional educators, police departments, parents, students and by numerous industry groups such as the Australian Road Safety Foundation.

The presentation demonstrates the consequences of choice through a highly relatable narrative, familiar to every teenager. For that reason, the presentation is particularly relevant to young people who are just beginning their experience of driving.

Parents of students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will receive a letter via email with further details about the presentation.
