In & around the school

Maths

In 9/10 Numeracy the students have shown significant growth in the Math’s Domain. Students have started to work on continuum-based learning. Continuum based learning allows kids to find where they fall along the series of learning. The program is set up so children are then able to work independently or in focus groups. The students have embraced this and are able to confidently use One Note to work independently. The students have been working on concepts from identifying prime numbers, representing numbers in index form, using the index laws, using scientific notation and even simplifying surds. Some students have indicated that they are capable of working at a standard higher than their current level.

Maths Challenge - The photos below were taken during  the Maths Challenge on Tuesday.  Students really enjoyed it and wish to see this sort of competition happen again in the future.

Humanities

Humanities with 8A

During term one of humanities we have been studying civics and citizenship with a focus on identity, values, diversity and inclusion. We explored our local communities, and school, and identified resources, events and spaces that support inclusivity across age, ethnicity, gender, language, LGBTQIA+, gender and religion. Students’ have explored multiculturalism, the census, the Australian identity and how identities can change and develop over time. We are now working on migration, and how migration, and changes to populations influence the economy, social aspects, and the environment.

Humanities with 7B

Year 7 students have made short reflections on their term.

I enjoy humanities because it teaches me about the world and things I need to know, such as democracy, voting and economics.

- Bella 7B

Humanities is probably my favourite subject, and I get to learn many new things. So far we have learnt about democracy, voting and more!

- Lara 7B

In Humanities we have been learning about the constitution, referendum, resources, scarcity and globalization and lots more. Globalisation is that we are more connected with people from around the world than ever before.

- Lily 7B

This term in humanities we have learn how to understand democracy, globalization, goods and services, economics and business and many more. I’ve enjoyed the letter we had to write to a politician about problems we can change.

- Olivia 7B

In humanities this year we have been learning about democracy. We wrote a letter to someone about issues we want to change, and how to make it happen. We have learnt about voting and who has the right to vote.

- Josh 7B

Humanities is good because you can learn about the government and the teachers are always good.

- Nate 7B

9/10 Psychology

The year 9/10 psychology students dissected cauliflowers as part of their formative assessment.  The cauliflowers were cut into different parts of the brain and dyed.  Students then had to explain where in the brain each part sat and what function it performed.  Well done Mrs Rose for considering wider opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding.

PAT Testing

Mrs Cook has been very busy in WB6 taking all of our 7-10 students through their literacy and numeracy testing and is now finished.  We will use this valuable data to inform our teaching.

Mr Churchill decided to photo bomb our photo to record these sessions, we love his sense of humour - even if it does attract the occasional eye roll from the students...

Music Musings

Wow! What a term.At the start of the year we welcomed our new instrumental music teacher Mr Ben Hunter to the music fold. Ben was a former music captain at Baimbridge and has come across from the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre where he has been the manager for the last two years. He is taking Guitar, Bass and Drums as well as being involved in the new year 7 music program. For the first time, all of the year 7’s are instrumental music students. That means 75 young people in the creative arts centre each week creating musical fusion.  The instruments range from all members of the woodwind and brass family with the addition of guitar and percussion. So far, we have had a go at the queen classic “We Will Rock You” and “Give it up” KC & sunshine band. Very exciting time for the music department’s future. Also, we have had an influx of instrumental music students with all the guitar positions going quickly and just a couple left for Bass and Drums. For those wanting to be involved in the music program come down and see Mr Hayes or Mr Hunter and get a form.  We are looking to include more ensembles in term two with the return of Choir on Mondays, Year 7 & 8 Band on Tuesdays, Rock Band on Wednesdays and Thursdays will have a newly formed year 11 ensemble. Dungeons will return for term two which is our regular concert series that will take place once a month down in the Creative Arts Centre. Our next scheduled concert will be the 6th of May at 7pm.

2021 Production News

This year Baimbridge will be running a production “Go Bandicoots!” which is musical written by Mr Hayes. Baimbridge has had a proud history of top line productions and this year is no different. It is a great opportunity for students who want to try something different, make new friends and have a positive experience to remember their high school years. As well as cast member we have roles for back stage crew and band members.  The story is about the life of a country football netball team where the boys can’t win a game and the girls can’t seem to lose. The story is about how the boys manage to turn their season around with help from the team’s new coach and his unconventional training techniques.  Auditions will be held early Term 2.
