What an amazing return to sport we are having - the troubles of the last two years are finally settling down and the sporting world is returning with vigour.

We have seen this at a school level, both here at Mount Alvernia and in the CaSSSA Association, where participant numbers in team sports are increasing as restrictions fade away. It has made for some great competition and watching some of the CaSSSA fixtures is inspiring to the Sport Department.

In our current term we are on a run of success, with our Basketball Opens and Year 12 teams on a five-game win streak, and our Year 10 soccer and Year 7 Soccer remaining unbeaten out on the field heading into Round 6.  We have so many teams out there giving all they have and sitting in great positions leading into our final weeks. It has been great to chase our sporting dreams and aim to achieve, but we must always balance this with a sense of humility and grace. While the wins have been great, what makes me most proud is the way our teams are showing sportsmanship on and off the field towards players, umpires, and coaching staff. Keep it up, sport stars.

We also celebrate the CaSSSA Athletics team on a fantastic fourth place position. While team sports have lots of numbers, athletics this season was lacking in attendance and commitment. A short lead0in, weather, and study pressure contributed to this. It was disappointing to see such a low turnout at training and meets, and only a small team of committed students was chosen to represent the College.

With a small team we expected to struggle on the day, but - credit to the skill and determination of the athletes - they performed above and beyond our predictions. It proves that we have the talent at the College and, with a small shift in culture about committing to the training, we could see a break into the top three in 2023.  Can we do it … it will be up to the students but. if the question is “Can we?”, absolutely we can!
