Book Week

CBCA Book Week 2022 – Dreaming With Eyes Open

This year’s Book Week celebrations were epic, to say the least. There were activities, events and competitions all week, including:

  • A book launch for Bianca Bignoux from 9C, whose picture story book ‘Neddy’s Box of Noodles’ was published recently - go to https://www.jaymahpress.com.au/ to order your copy, it’s a perfect Christmas present for a little person you know
  • An opt-in lunchtime activity where old, unwanted books were repurposed through the craft of book folding
  • Our very first Living Library, where small groups of students borrow a person, a living ‘book’, for a short time to hear their story – this year’s collection came from our school and wider community and included artists, global adventurers, a Himalayan mountaineer, a professional female firefighter, a volunteer from the Offspring Project, which fights for the rights of girls and women in Kolkata, India, and our very own Principal. If you would like to be a living ‘book’ at next year’s Living Library, please email nicolle.brigden@education.vic.gov.au
  • Our fabulous Character Day, which was an amazing celebration of the power of storytelling and the mark that well-written characters can have on our lives. The photos of this event speak for themselves. Congratulations to all who dressed up, especially to the winners of the Character Parade. The judges had a great deal of difficulty choosing the best costumes, against the rigorous criteria of; low/no cost, recognisability, imagination and the ‘Mabo’ of the costume, with bonus points awarded for the student/s having the book with them. The winners were:
    • 1st prize – Kayla, Rose and Sarah from 9L – Emma and the Twins from Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
    • 2nd prize – Elsie Maskell from Year 10 - Cinderella
  • 3rd prize – Zoe Van Leest from 7E - Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games series by Suzanna Collins
  • Special mention – Olive, Leen, Zahra, Emily, Evie, Lilly, India, Lara and Cailin from Year 8 - The Care Bears
  • A book ‘tasting’ where our Library was transformed into Bistro Bibliophile and customers enjoyed the ‘entrée’ of reading the first chapter of a book they wouldn’t ordinarily choose, with the goal of diversifying students’ choice of genres. They then shared what they read with the other diners on their table before being offered the ‘main course’ or borrowing their book so they could continue reading. Many students enjoyed their entrée so much, they did just that 😊

Thank you to all the students, staff and families who embraced Book Week with such enthusiasm. Book Week is the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s celebration of books and Australia’s diverse and incredibly talented authors and illustrators who write for young people. The MFG Library has all the books short-listed for Book of the Year (Older and Younger Readers categories) available for borrowing / reserving.

Here’s to a brilliant Book Week, this year and beyond.
