Visual Arts News

Mrs Christine Drenovski

At Wyndham Christian College students in all classes are immersed in regular structured Visual Art sessions in a purpose-built Visual Arts room. We aim to deliver an exciting and engaging Visual Arts Program which focuses on sequential development in the main areas of the Art program.

This enables students to develop skills, techniques and processes in the following discipline areas:

  • drawing
  • painting
  • construction
  • collage
  • clay modelling

Participation in the Visual Arts Program fosters group participation, problem solving, confidence, persistence, time management, responsibility, risk taking and personal pride.

By enabling students to experiment with a broad range of materials and styles, we endeavour to nurture individual expression and creativity, cultivate aesthetic awareness and develop an understanding of the elements and principles of art and elements of design.

While working in the Art Room, students are encouraged to develop their own critical awareness and ability to analyses artworks and appreciate the role of technological change.

Students study work from a range of artists and are encouraged to identify specific art styles and discuss their responses to selected art work. The program also has a strong focus on student engagement and improving social skills. Creativity is the ability to think outside the square, which is paramount in achieving success in all walks of life.

A highlight for our Prep to Year 4 students at WCC has been NAIDOC Week creative art lessons.  This was a special time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions Indigenous Australians make to our country and society. Some of the students’ artwork formed collaborative whole class murals.

Year 4 students learned to draw Winter charcoal trees, focusing on highlighting, shadowing and shading/blending techniques

Students in Year 6 made comparisons between two types of vases from history – Ming and Mong. They originated from the 15th century China. Here students used inspiration from studying the history and design to create their own piece of art.
