News from Year 2 & Year 3

YEAR 2

Students have been studying about local history and have dug deep into the history of the Werribee Mansion. As part of their project, they are working collaboratively to build a model of the Werribee mansion, using recyclable materials.

In maths we have been working on number sense and place value. It is important that students work with numbers in different ways to develop their understandings. It’s essential for young children to use manipulatives such as connecting blocks, counters, icy pole sticks to help, dice, playing cards etc to make and represent numbers. The photo of students using the coloured arrow cards help them to learn the value of each digit in a number. In the picture the arrow cards are together, the number is 8609, the arrow cards can be pulled apart to see that in this number the 8 = 8000, 6 = 600, 0 = 0, 9 = 9. The students with the playing cards are turning over 2 cards and adding the value of both cards, it’s important to develop automatic recall of addition facts, doubles, near doubles, and tens facts. Being able to recall these facts quickly will assist students in future when working with larger numbers and more complex algorithms.

Students use manipulatives to enhance their engagement in learning Units of Measurements.

Manipulatives will provide them the opportunity to own their learning.

YEAR 2 FRENCH

In French in Year 2, we have been learning how to read La Chenille A Faim, which is the French version of the Hungry Caterpillar. We have been learning how to say “I’m hungry! I want to eat!” In French.

YEAR 3

Students use manipulatives to enhance their engagement in learning Units of Measurements.

Manipulatives will provide them the opportunity to own their learning.
