Wing Threads Visit...

Milly Formby’s visit to St Joe’s

On Thursday 20th October, Milly Formby, from Wing Threads came to visit the 4/5/6 community to share her story about flying around Australia in a microlight plane to raise awareness about migratory shorebirds, and the 50 species that visit Australia every year on the East Australiasian Asian Flyway route.

Migratory shorebirds are some of the most endangered species in the world and Milly hopes that by teaching people about them we will join together to help protect and conserve the habitat they rely on to survive. The wetlands of Western Port are some of the most important ecosystems in Australia for these birds, with over 20,000 birds regularly stopping over the summer here to rest and feed, before taking off in April to head to Siberia to lay eggs and hatch their young. Species like the Red Necked Stint, Bartailed Godwit, Pied Oystercatcher, Eastern Curlew, and Curlew Sandpiper all make their way from Western Port to Siberia and back every year, sometimes 15 times or more in their lifetimes.

Follow Milly’s journey by subscribing through her website; Wing Threads, where you will receive regular updates about her progress and live footage of her flying her microlight plane from place to place.
