English
Reading and Viewing
In Reading, students will be exposed to the Fontas and Pinnell reading comprehension wheel. The students will be continuing to broaden their understanding of comprehension strategies through the Beanie Bear Program. These include making predictions and connections with the text. The students will be expanding their knowledge of blending and segmenting, graphs, digraphs and trigraphs while building upon their knowledge of the high frequency words. This term we will be revising the Jolly Phonics program.
Writing
In Writing, we will use the SMART Foundation Spelling program to introduce onset and rhyme and syllables.. Students will be building upon their knowledge of digraphs and learning about our vowel letters and simple spelling patterns. This term students will be introduced to our ‘Colorful Semantics Program’ in order to build knowledge of sentence structure and oral language skills. . Students will be continuing to experiment with writing features such as spaces between words, capital letters and fullstops. Students will explore the genre and purpose of writing to entertain. The students will also participate in formal handwriting lessons during the term and learn about upper and lower case letters.
Speaking and Listening
The students will complete activities that focus on listening and speaking during Literacy activities. From Week 2, students will also share in Language Experience. Please see the end of this newsletter for a roster of Language Experience topics for the term.
Maths
Number and Algebra
Foundation students will continue to develop their skills in place value, counting, identifying and ordering numbers. Students will also continue to build on their practical strategies to solve simple addition and subtraction problems. They will also be introduced to the concept of fractions and division by modeling sharing using practical situations.
Measurement and Geometry
In Measurement and Geometry, Foundation students will be exploring mass and capacity. They will compare objects and capacities to decide which is heavier and which holds more. Students will use everyday language to explain their reasoning.
Inquiry/RE
In Inquiry, students will be investigating Physical Sciences. In our unit ‘On the Move’ students will be exploring the way objects move. They will investigate how an object’s size and shape affects the way it moves as well as how a push or a pull moves or changes an object. In Religion, students will explore scripture and Jesus. They will interpret what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and reflect on how they can follow in Jesus’ footsteps.
Wellbeing
In our Social and Emotional Learning sessions this term, our topic is Problem Solving. Students will be working on practical and positive skills to manage problems. As a whole school, we will be participating in the PosiSchools program. The program is designed to teach children the skills to start positive habits for life.
