Prep News

Mrs Natasha Radley (Prep AHOS)

Prep life is always so much fun. The Prep students have enjoyed learning about addition facts and are getting really good understanding that two numbers make a whole number. They have even understood repeated addition. For example, 2 and 2 and 2 is 6. They have used a range of resources to manipulate the making of these numbers and then were able to show it on a tens frame as well as verbally describe what they have done.

Another interesting focus of learning in the past couple of weeks has been inferencing in reading. They have been using clues in pictures or sentences to infer what has happened or what might happen. They have spoken and written about this. Some students in Prep have some words to say about their learning lately:

Alfie A - Prep H

Inferencing is making good guesses

Willow M - Prep  H

Addition is like 1 plus 1 equals 2

Jarvis S - Prep H

Inferencing is like being a detective

Deana J - Prep F

We have been learning about making 5’s and 10’s

Sahbaj B - Prep C

We have been learning about inferencing. If you want to work out what is happening in the picture or the story, you have to look for clues that help you work it and then you know!

Ariana G - Pre C

We have been adding numbers so we can 2 and 5 makes 7 or we can say 2 + 5 = 7. It is really fun!

This week the new word of the week was “Teacher”. The sentence of the week was: “Which teacher likes to read to them?” The students in Prep enjoyed a range of teachers from Primary and Secondary reading to them throughout the week.

The rest of the term is very busy, so please take time to read the blogs and check your child’s note folder for any notes that may go home.

Year 1 and 2 News

Mr Jevon Scandrett (Year 1/2 AHOS)

It has been a wonderful first few weeks of Term 4 in Years 1 and 2!

Crazy Hat Day

To celebrate the opening night of the Middle School Play, ‘Alice in Wonderland’, students participated in a crazy hat day. There were so many creative hats on display, and this created a real ‘buzz’ amongst the students. It was wonderful to see so many students support ‘Alice in Wonderland’, with some even having the opportunity to participate in the Mad Tea Party before the show. It is fantastic to support live events at Aitken College!

Year 1 excursion to the Melbourne Zoo

On Tuesday 18 October, students in Year 1 participated in an excursion to the Melbourne Zoo. This excursion formed part of the studies in Integrated Studies during our ‘Flora and Fauna’ unit. Each class had the opportunity to take part in the ‘Wild Lab’ experience with a Zoo educator. They also were able to view the many wonderful exhibits throughout the zoo. It was a wonderful day with fantastic weather. An enormous thank you to the parent helpers for assisting with this excursion. I would also like to thank the staff for their hard work in planning and executing such a wonderful excursion for the students.

Jai C - 1R

On Tuesday all the Year 1 students were going to the zoo. When we got there it was very sunny. Our first stop was the Wild Lab Learning Centre, it was a place where we learnt about animals. I learnt that animals are very special to us and we have to care for them. Then we went to see almost all of the animals at the zoo. We saw the giraffes and the zebras, it was very cool and a lady came and talked about the oldest giraffe. After seeing all of the animals, we had lunch. We went to the lions and we saw it eating lunch. Next we took a photo of our class. Then we had to go on the bus back to school. I was very sad when we were going back to school.

Anhad  K - 1R

On Tuesday 1R and the other Year 1 classes went to the zoo. Our first stop was the Wild Lab Learning Centre. I learnt some facts about giraffes, they have a purple and blue tongue and the neck is long. They looked cool and fascinating. There was a cave and we saw so many animals. My favourite one was all of them! I felt excited and exhausted.

Siddharth K - 1R

On Tuesday the Year 1 students went to the zoo. I was so excited, I could not sleep!!! First stop was the Wild Lab Learning Centre. My favourite animal was the KING COBRA! My top three was the king cobra, tiger and shark. It was a friendly shark. I really was excited to see the platypus when I noticed it was playing with a ball, then it started to shimmer. In the end, I was overjoyed I got to sit in the back seat.

Halo S - 1R

Yes, finally it's Tuesday, I am going to the zoo. I got on the bus, when we got there we saw lots of animals. I learnt that giraffes have bluish purple tongues. I also learnt that butterflies only go on you when you do not move. When we had to go I felt sad because I liked the zoo.

As always, your first point of contact should be your child’s homeroom teacher followed by me as the Assistant Head of School (Years 1 and 2).

Year 3 and 4 News

Mrs Anne Adams (Year 3/4 AHOS)

Year 3 Reflections

Raavi SWe are doing solid, liquid and gas experiments and shared our experiments that we did at home. I melted butter, cheese, icecream, a frozen pea and chocolate. My findings were that the frozen pea didn’t really melt. The cheese and icecream melted the most. I used heat to change the state.

Nicholas ZWe were learning about analogue time. We used mini analogue clocks and we made the time with these. I made times with minutes in them.

Alyssa RWe do our reciprocal reading with books on our iPads. I was the ‘Link Maker’ this week. This means that I have to link the story we are reading to things that happen in your own life and things in other books.

Charli HWe are learning about fractions. We made a fraction wall. I learnt halves, wholes, eighths, fifths.

Year 4 Reflections

This term, Year 4 students are physicists. They are investigating forces and motion.

Bailey R - We have been learning about different forces in Integrated Studies. Push and pull are forces. Friction can create heat and slows things down.

Harper HWe did an experiment with balloons. We put the balloon on our cheek and felt how cold it was. Then we stretched it by pushing and pulling and felt it again. It was warm. When we stretched it, it generated heat because of friction.

Parthiv PGravity is a force that pulls everything to the ground. When rockets take off, they use lots of fuel to escape this force. They don’t need so much fuel in space. There is no friction in space because there is no air. There is nothing to push against.

Jordan BWe defied gravity by jumping and pushing ourselves off from the ground. When you bounce a ball, it will hit the ground with the force that you use and then the force pushes it away from the ground.

Year 5 and 6 News

Mr Nigel Keegan (Year 5/6 AHOS)

Term 4 is full of many exciting and challenging learning opportunities. Highlights this term include the Year 5s Integrated Studies unit on Adaptations and learning about the different ways organisms evolve and adapt to survive in their environments. The Kitchen Garden Program continues to be greatly enjoyed by students. Students are also busy creating poetic masterpieces in Writing. Year 6 highlights include practical science experiments on reversible and irreversible change, hands-on Maths activities with Patterns and Algebra, and learning to code through Digital Technology. Both year levels have also completed activities on mental health and well-being, and will participate in onsite Tennis incursions which is a new initiative in our Friday Sport Program.
