CPSW News

Over the last three weeks I have had the opportunity to attend three assemblies.  What a great opportunity to find out what our students are learning in their different classes and to recognise and celebrate those that achieve awards for showing the school values of honesty, respect, care and concern, and pursuit of excellence.   It is also a great opportunity for students who participate to build self-confidence, which in turn can add to increased self-esteem.

There are many ways that we, as parents can help our children to increase their self-esteem.  A website that came to my attention recently is Kidlutions.com which suggests five simple ways that we (as parents) can help build our children’s self-esteem:

1.      Provide a stable living environment:   where your child/ren feels loved and receives unconditional positive regard.  This is more than just shelter  – it also includes routine, limits, laughter and a sense of belonging.

2.     Challenge:  allow your child/ren to be challenged – focusing on progression, rather than perfection.

3.     Listen:  Spend some time giving your child/ren undivided attention rather than multi-tasking helping them to feel understood and wanted.

4.     Praise effort – not outcomes:  This one’s self-explanatory – saying “well done” for trying, and doing their best effort.

5.     Help child/ren be “you-nique”:  Help your child to find out what makes them unique and special.

This is just a summary of what the site listed.  If you would like to see the full blog you can find it on: http://kidlutions.blogspot.com.au/2014/03/5-surefire-ways-to-build-real-self.html

After reading the blog, I have personally set a goal to try and improve on one suggestion each week starting with improved listening with my own children - giving them undivided attention is sometimes a challenge when time is short.

Which one of the above is a good starting point for your family?
