School Sustainability

Recently, Reg Hickey came to talk to the Grade 5/6 classes about renewable energy.  Reg works at Watters Electrical in Shepparton and generously shared his time and knowledge to teach us about solar power.

We learnt about coal fired power stations and why they are harmful to the environment. Reg explained the components of solar panels and shared examples of how it worked and was recorded in his own home. This was very interesting and helped us to understand how solar was converted into electricity.

We also learnt that Australia is the highest per person user of solar energy.  Victoria is the highest state to use solar power and Mildura and the Goulburn Valley are the biggest uptakers of solar power in Victoria!  We should be calling ourselves world leaders in renewable energy!!

We were very interested to hear that a huge solar farm is being built by Watters just past Shepparton East - an excursion sounds like a great idea!?!?

We will continue to explore sustainability and renewable energy throughout this term and look forward to learning more from Kylee and Reg.
