At EPS we love Reading.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As the school holidays draw near, let's continue to focus on nurturing our children's love of reading.

Did you know that children who develop a deep affection for reading early on are more likely to excel academically? Numerous studies have shown that avid readers benefit from an expanded vocabulary, improved comprehension skills, and enhanced performance in various subjects. By immersing themselves in the pages of books, our children not only acquire knowledge but also develop critical thinking abilities and unleash their creativity beyond the confines of the classroom.

However, the rewards of reading extend far beyond academic achievements. When our children fall in love with reading, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, empathy, and emotional intelligence. They gain a broader perspective of the world, navigate through diverse cultures and experiences, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others. So, as we embrace the upcoming holiday season, let's continue to foster an appreciation for reading within our homes.

Here are some suggestions to inspire a lifelong love for books:

Create a cosy reading nook: Carve out a special reading space within our homes, where our children can escape into the enchanting world of books.

Celebrate reading milestones: Recognize and celebrate our children's reading milestones, whether it's completing a challenging book or discovering a new favourite author. Applaud their efforts, provide positive reinforcement, and show them that their dedication to reading is cherished and admired.

Lead by example: Let's be reading role models by sharing our own enthusiasm for books. Engage in conversations about stories, recommend books to one another, and spend quality time reading together. By showing our love for reading, we inspire our children to develop their own profound connection with books.

Explore the local library: Encourage regular visits to the local library as a family. Libraries offer a vast collection of books across various genres and age groups, fostering exploration and curiosity. Attend library events and programs, such as storytelling sessions or book clubs, to further ignite their passion for reading.

Make reading a holiday tradition: Establish a special reading time during the holidays where the entire family can come together and indulge in the pleasure of reading. This shared experience not only strengthens family bonds but also reinforces the importance of making time for reading in our busy lives.

Wishing you a holiday filled with the magic of stories,

Yours in reading,

Grace Smith-Davies (Literacy Leader)
