DEVOTION
‘And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth.’ John 14:16-17a
Jesus knew that his time with the disciples was coming to an end, but he promised them that they wouldn’t be alone. Instead, God would send his Holy Spirit to be with them as an advocate, or comforter. This promise from Jesus was beautifully illustrated by the Year 4/5 students in Worship on Wednesday.
Some of the students brought in their own soft toys as examples of items that bring them comfort. As Raahi explained, ‘If I had to go on camp and my parents weren’t there, I would miss them and I might feel worried and scared. So I like to take something with me that reminds me of them and how much they love me so I don’t feel so sad and like they are there with me.’
Items such as soft toys can be very comforting, but it’s not easy to carry them around all the time! Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to be with us for all time. God knows the struggles we face in life, and he doesn’t leave us to face them alone. He is our comforter. He stands alongside us and gives us strength, wisdom and grace for every situation.
