Responsible Serving of Alcohol Course

This week twenty s of our Year 12 students took a step towards planning their future by competing a Responsible Serving of Alcohol course. Monivae took advantage of a subsidised scheme jointly provided by the Shires of Moyne, Glenelg and Southern Grampians to deliver this four hour course free of charge to our students. This accredited course taught students the benefits to the staff, customer and communities of responsible serving of alcohol provided by licensed premises. Additionally, they were given strategies to assist in slowing down the alcohol consumption of patrons and given examples of how to act assertively in difficult situations during service. Practice in pouring standard drink sizes was a highlight of the evening – opening their eyes to the variety of glass shapes and sizes that makes this quite a complex task. All students successfully passed their 50-question test at the end of the evening and have walked away one step closer to being able to engage with the workforce as an adult.

Personally, I was delighted to receive the following feedback from the organiser of the program which reads as follows:

Caroline has asked me to relay her thanks to you for such a great session last night.  She was so impressed by the students, and had nothing but praise for their behaviour, enthusiasm and engagement.  She said they are an absolute credit to Monivae College, and you should be rightly proud of them.

Young Leaders 2023 Launch

This year Monivae College is participating once again in the Southern Grampians LLEN Young Leaders Program. After an application and interview process seven of our students were selected to participate in the program which aims to develop leadership capabilities and connections with senior mentors in our local business community. The program runs from April until October and students will take part in a variety of events, program activities and online workshops. Last week the students met their mentors for the first time and planned some work placement days during the holiday period. Students will be mentored by adults in the world of health and fitness, myotherapy, agribusiness, physiotherapy and music production.

The launch evening was a vibrant event with lots of conversations and discussion about the opportunities that can be found in our local community. The hope is that after tertiary studies these students may return to the community, building its social capacity and overall level of skill. The students are looking forward to their first activity which is a leadership and communication challenge in a MasterChef Mystery Box style challenge. This will be held at Monivae next week – we hope for some really delicious food offerings to be created.
