Term 1, 2021

We were delighted to be able to welcome the students back to school for the commencement of the new school year. We have had an exciting start to 2021, with the commencement of the Summer Interschool Sports programme and the appointment of this year’s Student Agency Team class representatives.

Our Unit or Inquiry, Who We Are, has enabled us to get to know each other better through the exploration of different perspectives and discussing the importance of being open-minded and good communicators. Student’s independence and commitment to their learning is encouraged in a learning environment where students are supported to reach their full potential.

Literacy

Reading

The focus during literature studies is to appreciate the techniques that the author and illustrator use to convey a message and/or tone.  Reading in class and at home is intended to build reading stamina and to encourage consistent reading habits. The literature studies will aim to connect with the Units of Inquiry. The Year 5 Literature Program incorporates the DAILY 5 Framework and the CAFÉ strategies to bolster reading comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expansion of vocabulary.

Writing

Our Writing Program will be centered on the ‘Writing Workshop’ which follows the Writing Process of; Prewriting, Drafting, Teacher Conference, Peer Conference, Revising, Peer Editing and Publishing.  Specific attention will  focus on the Writing Traits of; ‘Ideas’ ‘Voice’, ‘Word Choice’ and ‘Organisation’ within Persuasive and Narrative text types. The Writer’s Notebook will also be used to encourage free writing and the development of ideas or techniques that support our core writing program.

Spelling

The SMART Spelling Program determines our weekly spelling focus, as well as vocabulary related to Units of Inquiry. The program includes further expansion of vocabulary and word knowledge through students choice with the selection of words that are relevant to the weekly spelling focus. Daily classroom and homework activities reinforce the spelling program.

Focus will be placed on punctuation, tone, emotive language and using interesting adjectives to enhance writing pieces during the Writing Workshop Program.

Homework

Weekly homework tasks are distributed on a Monday and due back on a Friday. Homework tasks each week include SMART Spelling, Reading (min 20 mins 4 nights per week), Maths revision, including Essential Assessment ‘My Numeracy’ activities and project work. Students are expected to log their daily reading into their school diaries, recording the book title, number of pages read and time spent reading, initialled by a parent each night.

The weekly homework should be signed by a parent, acknowledging that the work is satisfactory and to the best of the child’s ability. Class teachers monitor student organisation and completion of homework tasks by checking students’ diaries and homework each week.
