Rowing

Mount Carmel was represented at the Schools No.2 and Tasmanian School Championship Regattas over the past two weekends by a contingent of nine U15 & U16 rowers.  Leading up to the school season these girls have spent the club season training and competing for the Sandy Bay Rowing Club.  The girls competed in singles, doubles and quads at the Schools No.2 Regatta with some of these races being qualifying events for heats at the championships.

At the Championships Regatta the girls had to battle it out in their heats from fields of up to 35 crews from all over the state, to make it into the top eight for a place in the final.  Unfortunately, they didn’t make the finals but over the two regattas they were competitive and rowed well in all their races.

The U15 girls who competed were; Isla Gerathy, Loralei Nesbitt, Arlina Mullins and Ava Riseley. For many of these girls this was their first full season of rowing.

The U16 girls who competed were; Lucy Balfour, Kate Steele, Stella Riseley and Amelia Doyle.  Both the U15 and U16 girls’ quads were coxed by Macy Balfour in Year 6.  For the Year 10 girls this will be the last time they compete for the school in rowing.

At Lake Barrington the girls hosted the only Taroona High School rower, Morgan Rees, a fellow SBRC member.  It was great to see them welcome him and his family into the Mount Carmel tent.

Thank you to Richard Gerathy for making our representation at the regattas possible, Liam Doyle and Richard for towing the boats and of course all the parents who assisted, on and off the water.  Thanks also to Mount Carmel for covering the cost of transporting the boats and the Sandy Bay Rowing Club for the loan of the equipment and boat trailer.
