From the Head

The following newsletter content was prepared prior to today's Victorian Government announcement that a lockdown will come into effect from midnight tonight.

The first weeks of our 2021 school year have included a happy return to a number of community events.  Beginning with the Welcome Assembly, for the first time in a long time, we all enjoyed the opportunity to conduct a gathering without masks.  While it was a short-lived freedom, universally everyone at Girton enjoyed being together, and especially joining together in singing the School song.  Then, at the end of the first full week, we hosted the Junior School ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening and the Senior School ‘GPF New Parents’ social functions.  The past year may have taught us resilience, but it has also reminded us of what is particularly important, such as personal connections and familiar traditions.  We have learnt that when you take away those two elements our lives seem less rich.

Our full co-curriculum program of sporting, arts and interest-based activities have also returned.  The School grounds are once again alive with the sound of ensembles and orchestras before school, at lunchtime and after school.  This Friday saw the staging of the Senior Swimming Carnival where I witnessed, for the first time, the spectacle that is the Spirit Cup. In an incredibly close contest, Jones House's vigorous and enthusiastic performance saw them take the Spirit Cup Trophy for 2021.

With our year off and running I remind everyone of the supports we have in place for both students and parents.  Experience tells me that we often wait longer than we should before seeking help or advice.  If there is something bothering you or your child, please let us know.  Early contact to your Head of House, House Tutor or via the range of services offered through 65 Wattle can provide you with practical support, options or information.  There are always knowledgeable staff and excellent resources on offer to assist you.  If you are in doubt as to who might be able to help, simply call one of our Receptions and they will point you in the right direction.

Welcome back to Girton Grammar in 2021.
