Harmony Day 2021

Upcoming Harmony Day Activities

Seeking Expressions of Interest for Family Involvement

In Australia Harmony Day began in 1999, coinciding with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.  It is celebrated annually on 21 March and is typically marked by community events and local activities, with the intention of promoting and celebrating social cohesion, racial harmony, participation, inclusiveness, diversity, respect and belonging.

Girton Grammar School has been celebrating Harmony Day in the Senior School with activities organised by the co-curricular group, Girton Community Action Group; such as an international food fair.

This year GCAG will partner with 65 Wattle, and celebrate across several days, with a raft of activities in Week 9 (March 22nd – 26th).

On the Thursday there will be a classic Aussie snag barbie at the Athletics Carnival, which will raise money for Rural Australian’s For refugees.

In addition, GCAG would like to host a Multicultural Fair with presentations, demonstrations and activities run by families and students from within the Girton Community.  We are thus seeking expressions of interest from any families who would like to share something with the school community. This could be a lunchtime activity (e.g. dance, song, music, story, theatre/pupetry, hair braiding, pinanta, origami, craft ….), a visual display (e.g. slide show, photos of your country of origin, traditional dress, cultural artefacts), a healing or wellbeing activity (e.g. meditation, yoga, thai chi), or writing (perhaps a story, interview with a family member, or an informative article – all of which could go into elink).

Girton is a diverse and wonderful community – and we want to know more about you, and where you come from!  ….. Be you descended from one of Australia’s Indigenous tribes, from multigenerational sheep farmers in outback Victoria, from Somalia, the land of the Taj Mahal, the country where potatoes were first grown, or the place of pyramids; we know that you have so much to teach us and would love to hear from you.

For further information or to offer an activity, please contact either Melinda Naughton melindanaughton@girton.vic.edu.au, Jinari Mountain jinarimountain@girton.vic.edu.au or Alli Williams alliwilliams@girton.vic.edu.au.  We will need to hear from you by no later than the end of week 5 (26th Feb).
