13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.

This passage tells the aftermath of the birth of Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel. Jesus was an asylum seeker who sought refuge in Egypt. Sadly we do not offer our asylum seekers the same hospitality with detention centres and  scarce assistance for many who seek refuge on our shores.

The Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project spent $80,000 last August paying for the rent, bills, and day to day expenses of many asylum seekers. That month they also assisted 258 people with housing. These costs occur every month.

The donations that Killester families have made these past few weeks will make a great difference to the families they support and help make Christmas better for so many. Thank you for your generous offerings and to your daughters who promoted this wonderful cause.

We wish you and your family a peaceful Christmas and look forward to a fresh start in 2022!
