Careers and Senior Pathways

Dear Killester Community,

As the 2021 academic year draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. There are still a few events which will be happening during the Summer break and I encourage students to investigate these. See you all in 2022.

Year 10 Work Experience Program 2022

A feature of the Year 10 curriculum for 2022 is the opportunity for students to participate in the week long Work Experience program. The calendared week for work experience is Monday 29 August until Friday 2 September, 2022. Students are encouraged to begin to source a placement over the summer holidays. Work Experience is about exploring an area of interest and not spending the week working in a regular part-time or casual job.

With regards to finding a placement students are encouraged to:

  • Think about what environment they would like to work in their future years and make a suitable choice for work experience placement.
  • To find their own work placement.  If they have some difficulty or need some ideas, they should approach the Careers Department and we will be able to assist with ideas or contacts.
  • Ideally it is best not to work directly under the supervision of a relative, especially their parents. It is acceptable for a student to work at a relative's place of employment, but in another area of the business. By all means, approach friends, neighbours or relatives to see if they can assist in finding a placement.
  • Not to seek a work experience placement where they already have a casual or a part time job.
  • Advised not to seek placements at the following types of work: fast food outlets, supermarket, stores, and similar retail type work as these are often where they might get a part-time job. This is not the purpose of work experience.
  • Encouraged to pursue opportunities outside the immediate geographical location of the school and their home such as the Melbourne CBD, regional and rural communities.
