What's happening in the classrooms?

What a year 2021 has been! The 3/4 class has especially enjoyed moments of laughter, success and challenge in Term 4, where they have excelled in resilience and perseverance.
Throughout Term 4, students in 3/4 have also displayed their creativity and curiosity as they investigated a range of poetry types in writing. Their poetry included using rhyme and incorporating interesting vocabulary into their poem. They related their poetry to the Inquiry topic of how food waste affects the planet and how people can help make the world a more sustainable place to live.
In Literacy, students focused on developing comprehension skills to assist them in understanding the texts that they read in more depth. They made connections between the text, other texts, their own lives and the world around them. They visualised texts by creating a story in their heads, and they developed inferencing skills by using prior knowledge and text clues.
In Mathematics, students developed their understanding of standard and nonstandard measurement forms. They used a range of objects within the learning space to measure the length (e.g., shoes, pencils, workbooks, etc.) and rulers and tape measures. Students were able to make mathematical connections between the two involving repeated addition and multiplication. These strategies enabled students to apply the learned skills and knowledge to find the perimeter and area of rectangles within the learning space.
Students applied their knowledge of volume and capacity by comparing and ordering amounts of liquid in containers with and without measurements. They collaborated to determine how much liquid each container held from least to most by pouring water in and out of each container, finding the difference and discussing why one could carry more water than the other even if the shape of the container seemed smaller in appearance.
To finish the year, students have been reading Scripture and watching short video clips about Jesus’ Birth and identifying the significant figures and symbols associated with the contrasting perspectives portrayed in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Students have designed and written Christmas cards and songs that reflect the story of Christmas, incorporating the important events, people, places and symbols relating to this blessed occasion as told by the Scripture.
