Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards

In Term 2, selected students wrote submissions for the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards as part of the Horizons program. The awards are a unique national project, giving Australia's youth a voice and an opportunity to strive for excellence in literature. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the students who crafted such powerful works. We celebrate the worthy recipients of a Commendation Award for their poetry, who were also presented with a certificate at Chapel this week.

I Might
by Ava McGregor (6G)

When people ask me my fear,
I play it basic.

I might say heights that give me anxiety,
Or flying above ground.

I would say spider’s and their hairy legs,
I could say trypophobia.

I will say confined spaces that make me sweat,
Maybe even sharks.

But I keep it sealed in a jar,
Far on a shelf.

Cause my biggest fear is that you would see me,
The way I see myself.

Sadness
by Elizabeth Pham (5R)

Sadness is when you:
Can’t think
Can’t remember
Everything is empty all your mind is white and black no pictures just patterns.

Sadness is when you:
Can’t thrive
Can’t feel
Can’t explain all the emotions that come out if you mean it or not.

Sadness is when you:
Can’t help
Can’t create
Can’t play all you want to do is disappear into darkness and fade away.

Sadness is when you:
Can’t scream
Can’t smile
Can’t find all the people that mean something to you.
They’re gone.
