Another very challenging year is drawing to a close. I hope you have all coped as best you can and are able to enjoy a break over the summer with your family. Some sleep-ins and time without commitments is of course the best tonic for tiredness and stress. It’s amazing how it dissipates once we step away.

I hope your children have ended the year happy and have enjoyed being back with their friends. They should feel proud of themselves for enduring another long period of remote learning and school disruptions. I am confident that we may have seen the last of extended remote learning and lockdowns. I am sure we won’t even have a short one next year!

For those who celebrate Christmas – Happy Christmas! Enjoy the holidays and Happy New Year.

Take care and thanks for reading!

YEAR 5 MYP INTRODUCTION

Recently I met the Year 5 cohort to introduce them to the MYP.

I started the presentation with some common anacronyms: IB – International Baccalaureate and MYP – Middle Years Programme, before explaining that as an IB school we are part of an international community of schools teaching the same programme. We then unpacked the IB Mission statement: “The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect” and completed a group activity where everyone contributed one idea to make the world a better place at a local, national and international level. It was then time to talk about the learner profile before everyone was challenged to take pictures representing each of the ten learner profile attributes.

Christmas is a time to celebrate with family and friends whilst relaxing and enjoying the time of year.  Unfortunately, 2021 was another difficult year – even more so for those already experiencing hardship.  A number of families in our community will not have the opportunity to enjoy the festivity time by exchanging presents and having food on their table.  During Term 4, Oakleigh Grammar organised a Christmas Appeal for the Greek Welfare Centre. SRC members from Years 6 and 7 came together and collected non-perishable foods for those in need in our community.

We would like to thank all the families who contributed to our Christmas Appeal and gave a donation.

LOTE

During LOTE – Greek lessons, Oakleigh Grammar students worked on the topic 'Christmas' by doing a number of different activities. Students from Prep to Year 7 had the opportunity to participate in the annual Children's Drawing Competition with the theme "CHILDREN DRAW CHRISTMAS" organised by ANTENNA PACIFIC.  The competition is open to children aged 3-14 living outside Greek borders and its goal is to unite all the Greek children in the world, with a common goal: to bring the happiest Christmas and fill everyone's hearts with love and optimism! Students created some beautiful drawings! As part of Oakleigh Grammars' commitment to community service, students in Year 8 and Year 10 wrote Christmas cards for our elderly who are living in different Nursing Homes around Melbourne and wished them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

In Junior School, students have been learning about the Christmas season. Students have extended their vocabulary by learning new words about Christmas and exchanging Christmas wishes with their teachers and friends. They also discussed several Greek Christmas traditions that passed from generation to generation and are still celebrated.  Finally, students practiced different Christmas songs.  Our Year 1 and Year 4 students were very excited since they had the opportunity to participate in a video by performing the traditional Christmas Carols for the Greek Channel ANTENNA PACIFIC.
