Italian Commedia Dell’Arte Incursion - Student Report

On the morning of Monday 30 April, all Year 7 students studying Italian watched a live “Commedia Dell’Arte” production entitled “Fooling In Love” by the Make a Scene Theatre Company. The performance was immensely enjoyable and very interactive and inclusive of the audience.

They featured stock characters who were masters such as Pantalone and Il Capitano and servants such as Columbina and Arlecchino. There was laughter and there were tears as the characters wove through the dramatic story.

Overall, the two periods were full to the brim with humour and an enticing and enthusiastic story plot. The infusion of phrases in Italian and English kept me constantly engaged. The facial expressions they conveyed were extremely entertaining, as were the characters they were portraying.

I would highly recommend this play for anyone young or old who is looking for a good laugh and a feel for the Italian language.
