Careers Excursion to Badger Creek Primary

On Friday 10th May we took 10 students to Badger Creek Primary School to talk about Careers.

The students spoke very well about various subjects and industries they are following in their pathways. The primary school students and teachers loved our students' input and they were all excellent role models for our school.

Thank you to Mrs Plunkett who drove the bus on the day and the students loved the hot chip day to thank them for all their work and promotion of the school.

Year 9 Science

Currently in Year 9 Science, we are investigating electricity in its many different forms and applications. Students are learning the importance of the universal colour coding system for electrical wiring and the difference between a series and parallel circuit. They have experimented with these two types of connections and explored the merits and limitations of both.

Most recently, students began to investigate the use of renewable energy and the various ways in which electricity can be produced from natural sources. The aim being to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and hopefully begin slowing the impact of global warming.

Students used our class set of renewable energy STELR kits to connect their circuits and observe the energy conversions possible from both solar and wind energy. They experimented with different sized blades on their wind turbines to establish the most effective length and the number of blades needed to achieve the highest energy production yield. They used large fans to simulate natural wind motion and could identify the correct wind speed and angle needed to turn their turbine at the appropriate speed.

Being such a prominent topic in the world we live in today, the students were able to make clear connections to the practical applications of what they were learning and identify the importance of continuing the research into clean, renewable and sustainable energy sources.

Worawa Reconciliation Sports Carnival

Recently, nine Year 10 students participated in the Worawa College Reconciliation Sports Carnival. The day was a huge success and a fabulous experience for students involved. Healesville High School competed in the netball tournament, playing against a range of teams from city schools and even one team from Sydney.

Although we did not make the finals, our girls enjoyed some victories and they demonstrated positive sportsmanship in each game. In addition to netball, the girls also witnessed a traditional smoking ceremony to welcome visitors to Wurundjeri land and they spent time dancing and having fun with the Worawa girls and other visiting teams.

Towards the end of the day, they were lucky enough to meet Melbourne Vixens players, Caitlin Thwaites and Ine-Mari Venter.

Year 9/10 Boys Footy 2019

On Tuesday 28th May the Year 9 and 10 boys footy team played in the interschool competition at Barngeong Reserve in Mooroolbark. We were a little undermanned as a few boys pulled out on the morning of the game but the rest of the team battled on manfully even though they were regularly outnumbered at most contests. Noah Warton worked tirelessly in the centre and picked up a ton of possessions and skipper Callum Sibley was tough and uncompromising in the backline, often beating up to three opponents at a time! Ruck-rover Jack Howie displayed excellent skills across the centreline and Jesse Todd battled gallantly in the ruck all day. Tyler Ledwidge played his first ever game of football and defended well in the backline.

At one stage his kick across goal in the last line of defence had his coach stressing, but it paid off with an accurate pass to Blake Beale who was able to play on and clear the ball out of defence! Shannon Oakley regularly provided a strong contest in the forward line and Tarkyn Nicolandos and Xander Synnott were able to convert in front of goal as a result. Connor Donegan ran hard all day through the midfield and Blake Beale took some crucial intercept marks in the last line of defence. Although our best result was a draw against Lilydale Heights in the last game, the group played really well as a team and most importantly – they all enjoyed themselves!
