Maths Information Session

Last Friday parents of 1/2 students attended an online Maths information session. The session involved:

*looking at how we teach Maths at SJV

*strategies that we use to teach addition in the Junior School

*strategies to teach addition with increasingly large numbers

*how parents can further support their child's Maths development at home.

Parents were informed that the main focus of Maths teaching in the Junior School is on developing and applying mental strategies. Furthermore, the written algorithm for addition is not introduced until the later years of primary school. This information can come as a surprise to parents; particularly as this is the main strategy that they remember being taught. Parents appreciated the games that were recommended to engage their children in developing their Maths skills at home.

Thanks so much to the parents that attended the session. In the coming weeks, more information about addition strategies will be sent home via Seesaw. I look forward to meeting and working with more SJV parents in the future as we work together to develop students' knowledge of and love for Maths!
