Parents and Friends Community News

We’d like to thank everyone who, so far this year, has provided their support to the PFC.  Kicking off with our great network of Class Reps who are reaching out to families, organising social catch ups and helping to build that great sense of community we at Brighton Primary School are so proud of.

We would also like to thank everyone for their recent support and encouragement as well as all the suggestions and offers to volunteer at future events when we had to make the unfortunate decision to cancel our first big fundraising event of the year - the Parents Event.

We hope you saw our post last week with the rest of the 2022 fundraising event dates and have marked these in your calendars.  We need all your help and support to make these events happen. The dates are also at the end of this message.

Given some of the questions we have had recently we thought it might help to let you know a little about who we are and what we do.

Who are we?

  • The co-leads of PFC are Jan Browne (mum to Hugo in 5B) and Emma Oliver (mum to Henry in 6B and Clementine in 2D).
  • Both work full-time and volunteer time to organise the fundraising events and the Class Rep networks for the school.
  • Both are on the School Council, one representing the PFC and the other as a parent member.
  • Both have been involved in the PFC and its predecessor FOB for many years.
  • We draw on parent volunteers to work on events - big and small -  so if you are interested, let us know.

Why do we fundraise?

  • To help the school deliver many of the projects not covered by government funding.
  • As a state run school, there is always a funding shortfall so this is where the BPS community can step in and help.
  • Examples of where fundraising has benefited the school in the past are:
    • painting the junior school;
    • refurbishing the junior toilets;
    • purchasing new classroom furniture;
    • new books for the classroom libraries and many more.
  • All of these have a direct positive impact on our children’s learning environment and their experience at school.

How does it all work?

  • We work with the School Council to approve our fundraising goals and proposed events.
  • We work closely with Joel and Steve to make sure we deconflict with the busy school calendar.
  • The school office provides many hours of support to us by posting our communications, setting up QKR, photocopying materials, and, importantly, managing our budgets and finances.
  • The Finance Committee has oversight of our budget and we are subject to audit.
  • All our events require a paper trail, and in true government style there is no shortage of paperwork to complete.
  • We rely on the class rep network to organise appropriate social events for their classes and year levels.

Events

  • Our events include, but are not always limited to,  the traditional sausage sizzles, lapathon, parents evening, mums lunch and dads footy.
  • This year we are planning to add the Community Carnival on 25 November and, if there is time, support and enthusiasm, there are a few other smaller events we would like to try.
  • Bear in mind we are unable to please everyone all the time.  Undoubtedly what suits some parents, won’t suit others, but we do try to offer a variety for parents, kids and the school.

How Can You Help?

  • We cannot achieve our fundraising targets each year without the full support of parents, families and the community
  • Some people prefer to donate money, some prefer to donate time, some are able to do both.
  • There is no expectation to contribute to every event, but we appreciate all help and/or financial support when you can.
  • Time can be whatever you have to offer from an hour cooking sausages to designing branding/graphics for posters right through to running stalls at the carnival.  Tell us what you are interested in.

We will always try to keep you informed and share news of events in good time, but please feel free to grab us at school if you see us stomping around the oval trying to find hide from our kids.
