Year Advisers

Year 7
As we approach the end of Term 3, I would like to congratulate Year 7 students on the quality work that they have produced across all of their subjects.
In Middle School, some excellent poetry magazines have been published as part of a group assessment. Teachers have been very impressed with the progress that has been made in the students’ creative writing skills. Students have also developed their ability to collaborate and work as part of a team.
Household storage issues have been solved in a range of different ways as Year 7 students designed and built their own household storage units as an assessment task for Investigation and Communication. Special mention to Julian Nicholls, Jessica Lundberg and Ella Lauchlan whose projects were particularly well thought-out.
Students have just begun their ‘Choices’ unit in Human Relationships. This unit focuses on developing healthy relationships with other people as well the challenges involved with social media and learning to be a positive digital citizen.
All Year 7 students completed their dance unit where they were taught a number of social dances. As students dance with partners, this unit is also valuable in giving students the opportunity to interact with others in a different manner than they normally would. It was pleasing to see the way this unit was embraced by the students and they certainly enjoyed dressing up and performing as part of their assessment.
Exciting things have also been happening in YAP where our students are wrapping up their “Mission to Mars” projects. They have been integrating skills from all content areas in order to set-up fictional colonies on the planet Mars. The teachers are very excited to see their final products on Thursday.
As always, students are rewarded for positive behaviours using our Vivo system. Congratulations to Alexander McGavin, Preeya Brown, Lachlan Knowles and Lachlan Gunn who have are the top Vivo earners for Year 7 in Term 3.
Preparations for “$20 Boss” are in full swing. I am very much looking forward to visiting all the Year 7 businesses in Week 5 next term to take advantage of the innovative ideas that our students have developed.
Also in Term 4 will be our Year 7 Welfare Day. This will involve a presentation from Life Education as well as a range of activities that allow students to develop skills in resilience and start to consider future career prospects. I’m sure our students will enjoy this day and also learn a range of skills.
I wish everyone well for the holiday break.

Year 8
Year 8 students have had an amazing term, full of achievement and success on a diverse range of areas. Year 8 have, as a cohort, have been improving their attitudes towards their learning and are taking on more challenges, which is to their credit.
Our term started with YAP Night. Students got to show what they have been working on along side of year 7 YAP. Arabella Kimber and Megan Blair showed us their TED talk and then we had amazing musical performances from Music. The Year 8 Band, who took out Henry Kendall’s Got Talent again performed for us and did an exceptional job. This talented group also performed at PAN later in the term.
I cannot miss the chance to congratulate Abby Welsby on her amazing efforts funding raising and shaving her head for 'Shave for a Cure'. Not only was it amazing to see Abby's commitment to this charity, but it was amazing to see so many Year 8 students come and support and cheer her on as she completed to shave.
Leadership
In week 8 we inducted our new leadership team. Arabella Kimber and Mackenzie Goodhew were elected for SRC. For the first time at Henry Kendall High School, Junior House Captain’s were elected. The following students were elected:

Welfare Day
Year 8 got to explore the power of their words, to others and themselves. They then looked at how to present themselves on social media and the power social media has on their future. We then looked at stress management techniques and explored what healthy relationships are, in which the students were fully engaged and asked brilliant questions to explore their understandings. Students then engaged what they are currently learning in History and got to launch a small replica trebuchet. Finally we finished the day with trivia. Overall, Year 8 had a very positive and fun day as a cohort. We would like to thank the wonderful Year 12 students who cooked our BBQ lunch for us!
Drama Performances in English
Year 8 have been working on their Drama topic this term. I have been lucky enough to be invited to watch many performances. The students have put a lot of time and practice into their performances and it showed! They should be proud of the amazing performances they created.
I look forward to another great term in Term 4. I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing holiday!

Year 11
Wow, where did the last three terms go? Year 11 are currently sitting their preliminary exams before they move into the HSC year. I am very proud each and every student who has worked extremely hard over the past three terms, accepting the challenge of senior school with motivation and perseverance.
Welcome to our 2018/19 leadership team
Congratulations to our 2018/19 leadership team who were elected by our student and teacher bodies to represent Henry Kendall High School. Senjay Turner and Alex Sidiropolous were elected as Captains, with Eli Clarkson and Tiarna Houghton elected Vice Captains. We also have Oscar Tebbutt, Mason Colwell and Gemma Sharpe as prefects, making up a strong and proud senior executive team. Senjay and Alex spoke proudly during their first speech as captains at the SRC investiture last week, demonstrating fantastic public speaking and leadership skills.
Mock Trial
Our amazing mock trial team have done Henry Kendall High School extremely proud this term, reaching the final 12, yes 12 schools in NSW. They were the last public school in a field packed with non-comprehensive and selective schools from around the state. This is fantastic achievement and we are so proud of the level of professionalism and school pride that was displayed throughout the Mock Trial tournament.
Max Potential
Mason Colwell, Marley Irvine and Kirsty Abigail were acknowledged for their achievements at the Max Potential show case this term. Each student created a community services project that was important to them, all choosing to make a significant change to the lives of students here at Henry Kendall High School. Certificates were presented to students by Central Coast Councillor Jilli Pilon. A big thank you to Mr Ardley and Ms Reynen for their hard work as mentors.
Year 12 Crossroads Camp
The Crossroads camp will take place on Wednesday 24 October to Thursday 25 October (week 2). This is a MANDATORY course for all Stage 6 students in NSW Government Schools. The camp reflects on contemporary health issues facing young people. It acknowledges and aims to support senior students as they address changing issues related to identity, independence and their changing responsibilities.
The first payment of $85 is due with the permission note on the 27 September 2018.
The second payment of $80 is due on the 18 October 2018.
If you have any concerns about payment, please see me as soon as possible to discuss options.
A final farewell to our preliminary year.
I would like to congratulate every student in Year 11 on a positive transition into senior schooling. Many of you have worked extremely hard and produced high quality work throughout the last three terms. There has been a significant decrease in negative Sentral mentions and an increase in positive recognition and discussion between staff and students. I am very proud of this year group and I look forward to conquering Year 12 with you all.
