Being considered  a devout Muslim, I felt a huge sense of loss at hearing of the events that unfolded in Christchurch recently.  In Islam, we consider any Muslim - regardless of race or colour - to be a brother or a sister. We are taught that we are like a body and if even the smallest of parts are affected, we all are affected.

This is why I spoke to Ms Harris about organising a fundraiser  (having a casual clothes day) and performing the Call to Prayer - not just to help those affected by this incident, but to help in preventing future hate crimes from occurring.

The idea of holding these events was to create a sense of unity within the community of Brunswick Secondary College, to help bridge the gap of of misunderstanding between different cultural groups.  We are all human, we all have flaws, we all have strengths.

We should strive, no matter our culture, background or ethnicity, to better unite.  As the Greek storyteller, Aesop once said :

"United we stand, Divided we fall."

I take this opportunity to thank everyone involved - from Ms Harris, to the School Captains, to the  Year 7 boys who helped at the barbecue - and want them all to know that the BSC Muslim community truly appreciated BSC's response to the recent tragedy in NZ.
