What an amazing term of learning we have had! Thank you to all the teachers, students and families who have worked tirelessly to make our start to 2023 successful. All the students have made a smooth transition to school. They have settled into their learning environment with ease. It has been great to see the collaboration between students and the new friendships they have formed. Seeing their smiling faces as they skip into school each morning has been a pleasure.
Teachers have worked hard to plan engaging learning experiences for their students. The students have had many wonderful opportunities to make, explore, inquire and learn. Here are some of the best things they have enjoyed this term.

BUONGIORNO!
Salve a tutti! (Hello everyone!).
Venerdì scorso, (last Friday), the grade 3/4‘s, Mrs Panzarino, Ms Zorzut, Ms Janette, and 4 parent volunteers, (Josie Servello, Rose Piotti, Sandra Joson and Josie Perri) and myself, (signora Rosa), went on an escursione al museo italiano, (excursion to the Italian Museum) in Carlton. It was part of the children’s Inquiry unit titled, “What’s your story?” where we focused on Italian migration to Australia.
When we first arrived al museo, we listened to a very informative talk, and watched a film clips about perché la gente (why people) left Italy, che parti d’Italia, (what parts of Italy) had the most migration to Australia and cosa (what) people brought over with them. There were opportunities for question time, as well as playing a guessing game - Indovinello, whereby some olden day objects were shown and children were asked to guess what the objects may have been used for?
After the talk, we then went off into groups and explored the Museum. One section had a giant regional map of Italy, showing each region’s migration population to Australia. Here are the top 5 regions:
I wonder if any of your relatives were in the above statistics? 😊
Another section of the Museum had a large Italian/Australian timeline dating from 1770 until present day. Here the children were asked to complete various questions related to the timeline. One interesting fact that the children learnt was that the iconic cricketer Sir Don Bradman, actually had Italian heritage, (one of his great grandfathers had been one of the first Italians to migrate to Australia in 1826).
The children also found out that the suburb Carlton itself was also named “Little Italy” because this was one of the first suburbs that Italian migrants moved to when they came to Melbourne. As a result of this the children also went for a walk along nearby Lygon Street, looking out for Italian themed shops and ticking them off on their checklists. We did come across a number of shops,(not as many as it used to have), one popular shop being Brunetti, especially famous for its dolci, cakes, desserts, coffee, etc.
Next, the children were very excited and very fortunate to have lunch at one of Carlton’s long-standing Italian ristorante, Ti Amo, on Lygon St, which also happens to be managed by one of our very own St Fidelis community members, Giancarlco Masini, (Olivia and Alessandro’s dad). The children ate deliziosa pizza margherita e gelato for lunch.
Mille grazie (Many thanks) to Pietro, our very busy cuoco (chef) and to Giancarlo, especially for helping out with this part of the escursione, there were numerous chats and emails to make sure that everyone was catered for… and they all were! The food was buonissimo! Ti ringrazio ancora!
We all had a great day out, learning more about Italian migration, as well as the impact it had on the suburb of Carlton in Melbourne. I’m sure everyone went home that afternoon with many new stories and experiences to share with their own families.
Finally, I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all our St Fidelis families, Auguri di Buona Pasqua e Buone Vacanze! (Wishes for a Happy Easter and Happy Holidays).
Signora Rosa 🌹
