Senior Visual Arts Excursion

On Wednesday 29 March, our Senior Visual Arts students in Years 11 and 12 attended an excursion to the Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW). Students had the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the physical space of the prestigious art gallery.

As part of the HSC Visual Arts course, students are required to complete a self-directed artmaking project known as the Body of Work (BoW). The BoW is an intensive experience requiring each student to conduct an extensive amount of research, idea development and experimentation. Many students undergoing the process of creating a BoW express the same initial thought - where do I seek my inspiration from?

To inspire students, the cohort attended the AGNSW to view the ARTEXPRESS Exhibition. ARTEXPRESS is an annual exhibition that has been running for 40 years. It features a selection of outstanding student artworks developed for the artmaking component of the HSC examination in Visual Arts in NSW. It includes a broad range of approaches and expressive forms, including ceramics, collection of works, documented forms, drawing, graphic design, painting, photomedia, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and fibre, and time-based forms.

The high calibre of student works in the exhibition provided our current senior cohort with inspiration, guidance, and a range of ideas to reference in the creation of their BoW.

In addition to the exhibition, students viewed the most recent addition to the Gallery - The Sydney Modern. The Sydney Modern is the most significant cultural development in the city scene since the opening of the Sydney Opera House half a century ago. With a grand total construction cost of $344 million, this building did not disappoint. Students could physically interact and engage with art, gaining a deeper appreciation for the art world and the numerous international and national artworks.

This experience was invaluable to our Senior Visual Arts students, in both their inspiration for their BoW journey and to experience art in the real world.
