CinefestOZ Excursion

On Friday 28 April, the Year Sevens and some Year Eleven and Twelve media students boarded two buses and headed into town to participate in a CinefestOZ programme. CinefestOZ is a company that shares Australian-made feature films and short films with the public and gives them chances to meet and chat with crew members from the films such as actors, directors and producers. From Thursday until Sunday, CinefestOZ played many Australian-made films at the cinema, including Sweet As, Shackleton and The Last Daughter

To begin the day, we headed to Orana Cinemas to watch the feature film Blueback. Blueback is filmed in Bremer Bay and follows the story of Abby, a young girl who makes friends with a blue groper while she’s out diving with her mother, Dora. When Abby learns of a plan to destroy the reef her fish friend calls home, she and Dora set off to show everyone that the reef is a beautiful place that deserves to be protected. After watching the movie, we got to have a Q&A with the costume designer to learn about her experiences working on the film set. Her information was very interesting, and we asked her lots of questions about her career.

Then we left the cinema and headed to the Museum of the Great Southern. We had lunch and then split into groups to do four fun rotations. One of these was making our own movie lighting. We had lots of fun experimenting with different colours, shapes, positions and movements. Another was learning about the history of Albany with lots of different museum exhibits. It was interesting to see what the port looked like long ago. The third rotation was building our own film soundtrack on a DJ booth. It was very loud and very fun. And for the final rotation, we learned about the filming behind the TV series Bush Mechanics

We would like to thank Miss Gunning and Miss Smith for organising the event, and we would also like to thank the workers at CinefestOZ for giving us a fun day outside the classroom. We really enjoyed the excursion and hope that we can continue the program with future Year Sevens. Thank you.

The West Australian Pulse Exhibition

Congratulations to Henry Baker (2022, Wilson), for his selection in The West Australian Pulse Exhibition held at the Art Gallery of WA.

Henry’s piece titled ‘The Oracles’, features in the exhibition alongside artworks by 61 Year Twelve graduates from 36 schools across WA.

Created with acrylic paint and posca pens on plyboard, Henry’s piece explores the many different personalities of seagulls. It is a playful and whimsical social commentary.

This year The West Australian Pulse artists explore themes of mental health and social pressures, gender and culture, environmentalism and technology.

You can see Henry’s artwork at The Art Gallery of Western Australia until 20 August. For more information and to vote for his piece in The West Australian Pulse 2023 People’s Choice Award, visit https://rb.gy/ybqbp
