2023 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show – Sustainable Scarecrow Competition

We are thrilled to share with you the latest achievement of the innovative team at TLC. Their creativity was on full display at the International Flower and Garden Show Sustainable Scarecrow Competition. The team designed and built a stunning scarecrow entirely from recycled materials, earning them first prize and high praise from Education Minister Natalie Hutchins.

The scarecrow, created with imagination and resourcefulness, featured a body made from an old fruit basket, a skirt made from discarded shopping bags and eyes made from table tennis balls. The team even fashioned a hat from an old colander and used old cans and pots for the scarecrow's arms and legs.

Additionally, the TLC included a display of colourful hands on the scarecrow, representing the importance of embracing and celebrating diversity. The hands were made from recycled picture frames, adding a playful yet meaningful touch. This aspect of the scarecrow conveyed an important message about the value of inclusivity and diversity in our communities. The judges were impressed with the innovative use of recycled materials, which not only created a visually stunning scarecrow but also carried an important message.

The scarecrow will remain on display at the Flower Show until early next week, after which it will take pride of place in the garden near the year 7 centre.

Congratulations to the TLC students and their recognition at the International Flower and Garden Show Sustainable Scarecrow Competition. We can't wait to see how the school garden continues to evolve.
